Yeah, it's a really dark story. It's definitely not bittersweet like the first one was. It's just pure rage and suffering. I don't think they got the balance right personally.

I play games to feel good. If I wanted to feel completely crap I would watch the news all day. I think that was the glaring point that they totally missed going in like that. Thing is, if the story telling was good it would not have happened.

Spoiler alert.

Ellie gets everything she ever wanted. A partner/wife and a child. They are living in a beautiful house in the countryside with no zombies nearby at all. They literally have everything you could desire.

So Ellie decides instead to leave her partner and child and go on an expedition of revenge. It just doesn't make any sense at all. Even the most miserable person in life would not do that. And of course, it ends up bad. Just like every other decision she makes in the game.

It's just not fun. It does not have any of the light hearted funny and warm moments the first one had in spades.

By the time it is all over you hate Ellie more than the "bad girl". That is how bad it is. You go from fatherly protective feelings in the first game to wondering why you are bothering to move the joystick for the miserable little cow. Like really, the last few hours of the game are literally painful.

The story in part II definitely leaves you feeling hollow. I hated the story and the dumb decisions in it. I overall liked the game, nowhere near as much as the first, but thought it was worth a playthrough. The world is still awesome and the gameplay was great imo.

I thought the gameplay was better in part II (AI was much better), and the art and design were brilliant in both. It was just the story that left everyone feeling empty. And to be honest, that was half the reason why the first was so successful in the first place.

Everything was brilliant apart from the story. Graphics a big improvement, worlds a huge improvement and etc. It's just the nonsensical story. I mean, you wouldn't go and see a crap film and then rate it based on locations and picture quality.

But yeah I just don't play games that make me angry miserable or upset. Too easy to do that just by going on Facebook or some rubbish lol.

I played WoW for over a decade and that has some of the worst storytelling of any game. ;)

Yeah but you pretty much made your own game with that. Kinda like a sandbox. Most online games don't make sense, you just play with others and have a fun time.

What they should have done was given you options. Like games have been doing for decades. The game is far longer than the first, so splitting it up into happy or crap and making it shorter would have made it immeasurably better imo.

Ellie becomes that bummer friend you have who can't learn not to bum you out and you end up avoiding.

Some people go nuts over "WoW lore", but I get what you mean and don't disagree with you about LoU Part II. The biggest failing of that game though story-wise IMO is what they do near the beginning. It pretty much makes you hate the game right off the bat and they do a horrible job of making you like the story again. It's going to be interesting to see how the show handles it.
