I was fixing some fans in my computer and when I went to turn it on, it turned on but no boot. The cpu is not getting warm. I tried taking out the ram. I swapped the cpu for my phenom and still not getting warm. My gtx280's light on the back is on though and my fans and leds are on... I am dubbfounded and am hopiong my motherboard didn't just die.... Can anybody help!?:(

1) Is the CPU power plugged in? The 4+4 pin on the top left of the board
2) Is the Motherboard connector fully in? 20+4 pin on the right of the board
3) Is the CPU fan in the correct header? Some motherboards will not turn on unless so.

ok so I unplugged both of the cable both the 8 and the 24 pin and plugged them straight into the mobo without extensions.the cpu is plugged into the right spot. The cpu gets hot, but still no post and now the gpu fan stays at 100%

The GPU fan is supposed to jump to 100% for a second or two on boot.

We are getting closer.

Turn the computer off then remove the CMOS battery for about 5 minutes and place it back in. This will reset the motherboard. Then turn the computer back on a tell me what happens next.

I have resat everything and I took the battery out for 5 min. The gpu speed stays at 100% for about 8sec and then pluses from off to on every 2sec. the computer stays on until the temp of the cpu gets too hot, then shuts off. I am thinking maybe there is a short behind the motherboard. Not sure why there would be but when I get off of school tomorrow I will pull the mobo out of the case and test it that way

The heatsink in mounted correctly, the fan is just moving at the lowest rpm possible. I did reapply thermal paste. I pulled it out of the case and layed it down on the box it came in to eliminate the possibility of a short. Now my pc turns on without like its been but it shuts off after approx 5 seconds. O I forgot to mention that when I don't have my ram in, it doesn't put out a code to tell you that it is out... I am really starting to think this thing is done... but I kinda hope its not. This is the last thing I wanted to have to replace right now :,(

update/
So since I am now convinced its dead, what should I get to replace it? thinking 990fx maybe?

OK so I was working on my pc today and it finally came on, but the gpu is stuck on full load. Could a dieing gpu cause my pc to not turn on?
