just plugged the HDD from another pc into mine, removed the needed files, moved it to master and reformated it. plugged it back into the original machine, hit the power and before the monitor even registers it cuts the power. the machine is using a 300W psu, Athlon xp2000, 2x 256MB pc2100 and an old asus motherboard. iv messed with the jumpers on the HDD, tried using one ram stick, will now remove all peripherals, altho i fail to see how they would cause such a severe boot failure.

is it possible that windows configured itself to my pc in such a way that it cant even be read? but again the machine should still post :(

erm, try different components in different comps

could be psu, but try swapping HDD into otehr rig before trying a new psu

I dont think it has anything to do with hdd settings , seems hardware trouble, maybe while you taking it out or putting it back in something came loose , perhaps a cable. You can try clearing your cmos. Check most of the cables connection as well as heatsink , ram , pci , agp, pci-e, power connections.

yea tried it on master and slave, with all jumper settings. today ill strip it down to nothing but PSU, MoBo, cpu, HDD and one stick of ram. then replace them with ones i know work one by one. The HDD in question boots fine in my pc (the one on which it was formatted)

Also, its not turning off, its going into standby and then turning off after a while. and there are like 20 different jumpers on it, the only one i can see of relevance it the clr rtc one?

are all the fans running ect, but no vga....ifso, likely course is mobo. but i have had occasions where its been the cpu.

all fans kick in, light on the motherboard reads ok, then it just turns off. the fact that i dont get a screen saying something is missing or wrong makes me think that it is the MoBo

Could it be due to cpu fan , there is an option in bios which checks for cpu fan and if its enabled and not getting the signal properly it might shut it down thinking cpu fan is not working.

We've tried two diffenent fans on the cpu. in both CPU fan connectors on the mobo. I think its the mobo due to the fact we're not getting any beeps from the system speaker.

Well have you tried running the system without the case incase something making contact where it shouldnt. Like take the motherboard,hd, psu out of the case and try it like that.

thats a bit risky because of all the static

I run my system out of the case all the time. You just need to make sure you don't place the motherboard on a fur rug or anything silly like that.

Best practice would be to place it on top of an anti-static bag.

Yep, when I was testing my BT, I just put the anti-static bag that came with the mobo ontop of the mobo box, and the mobo on top of that.

Well ive just got back form llwyds. Weve spent about 12 hours swaping components in and out. tried two different mobos, In and out of the case, different PSU, Different CPU, Different ram, different hdd, everything. And all to no avail.

One thing our friend forgot to mention was that it was his dads company's computer. So we shouldn't have done anything with it and just (as we're looking into now) just built him a new one. God knows whatll happen to that one now, i think its best off in the recyling bin.

Case closed.
