Help Needed with power supply

Hi Guys

So i done my first build although i ran into a problem and was wondering do you know what the problem is.

When I plug the computer in and press the power switch on the front of the case, everything turns on for a split second then switches off. The power LED on the mother board is on, the computer just won't switch on it seems, Now i have tried different things with help with my friends like trying different power supplies and making sure the voltage was set right but i am stumped.

Any help would be grateful.

Have a read of the quick flick of the fans thread, as it seems to be a similar problem, and I am having it too.

Definately try and jump start your PSU as this will give an indication of possible faults (if it does not start - its knackered)

Are you using the asus p5b-d? If so it is dead, RMA it.

Just out of interest, you tried other psu's and got the same problem? To me that rules out any issues with the psu.

The asus commando does that after a bad overclock. Clearing the cmos, leave it turned off for a while usually works.

Mind you, my asus blitz seems to be doing this too. I think there is a common theme here... Asus mobos having the fan freeze thingy (thats the technical name ;))

Thanks mate i will look at that now, this may sound stupid but how do you jump start your power supply?

Fan freezy thing lol :p

The motherboard is the Asus P5N-E SLI and yes i have tried other PSU and have still got the same problem. I have also tried clearing the CMOS but did not leave it off for long so i will try that again. Thanks

Jim's Asus/P965 resuscitation guide:

1. Turn system off at mains.

2. Remove both memory modules.

3. Turn system back on at mains.

4. Power PC on via case button.

5. Power PC off via case button.

6. Turn system off at mains.

7. Insert 1x memory module.

8. Turn system on at mains.

9. Power PC on via case button.

10. If the pc turns on normally then go back to step 6. If not, go to 11.

11. Turn system off at mains.

12. Remove CPU and Memory.

13. Turn system on at mains.

14. Power PC on via case button.

15. Leave for 1 minute.

16. Power PC off via case button

17. Turn system off via mains.

18. Insert CPU and Memory

19. Turn PC on at mains

20. Power PC on via case button.

If you get to step 20 and still have no joy - RMA IT

What ram are you using?

The P5N-E SLI is terrible for memory compatibility. If you can get into the Bios at all up the voltage too 2.1/2.25.

If you can't get into the bios try and get hold of some other ram.

I have this issure with my patriot. It'll run at 2.1v, but wont even post at 1.9 (default).

Only back from school now long day just want the comp working lol

Mr. Smith thanks for the info will try this first

XMS thanks for the guide have to try this as well

HAM i am using 2x Kingston 512mb RAM PC2 4200U 444 - 12 - A1(thats what it says on chip if its any help)

THanks for all the help guys this forum is amazing :worship:

Mr Smith i tried jump starting the psu and it worked fine.

So then i tried XMS Jim's Asus/P965 resuscitation guide and it didnt work lol

Any other ideas

Yes.

Your motherboard is dead. RMA it (go online to wherever you bought it and fill in the RMA form, send it back, get a replacement/exchange).

ok thanks for the help

I'm unlucky so I got a dud, but the P35 based blitz rocks tbh, me, pv5150 and azreil have the ddr2 version, I beleive XMS has the ddr3 version.

Anyway its sh*t hot mate but has a waterblock on the north bridge...

abit ip35 pro is solid, asus p5k-delux, check out the review section here for mobo's

Thanks mate having a look now

Im going to go for either Asus P5K or the Asus Blitz Extreme P35 Socket 775 Motherboard

Does the Asus Blitz Extreme P35 Socket 775 Motherboard support DDR2 cause it says Dual channel memory architecture

4 x DIMM, max. 8GB, DDR3-1333*/1066/800, non-ECC and un-buffered memory

* The chipset officially supports the memory frequency up to DDR3

Cause if it doesnt then i will defentily go for the Asus P5K
