Help me with network traffic specs for streaming media files ?

I had no idea which forum this belonged in !! ;)

If I choose an average broadband user as having a 2mb adsl line, does that mean they can typically download 220k/s ?

If that is the case, can I assume, that if their connection is also doing a little other work, or suffering usual service flucuations, that they will probably hit around 200k/s in a sustained flow ?

Does that mean that if I want to deliver a streaming media file that is 3 minutes long to that user, then I should be able to make the file up to 36mb big ? (Calculation being that the user can download around 12mb a minute (200x50 = 12,000))

I'm not saying that that's how big I intend to make the file, but would that be a reasonable maximum ? (Please feel free to point out if I'm making some calamitous error here  )

We're an academic institution, so we have mucho bandwidth ;)
Ah Rly? :) ok then yeh, the average dsl user has 200 KB/s to play with. If they're on Max it will be 400-ish, but it depends on whether they have max or not.

Streaming without buffering at 200kb/s to an adsl lines not a good idea, and it's probably best to use a lower bandwidth than 200kb/s because they won't always have 200kb/s free.
