Help me pick my main monitor

Hi everyone, so at the moment the monitor i am using right now has a resolution of 1680x1050, and its 21.5"

I want to run a dual monitor setup to run off of my 580, mainly for school (software engineering in September), but when i have free time to game, i'll be using the new display.

oh, just if it wasn't clear, i am looking for 1 screen and the old one will be used just as extra screen real-estate

SO i'm now not sure about what i should get, from looking around my choices seem to be limited to:

1920x1080 - 24inch ( The cheapest )

1920x1080 - 27inch ( Mid $ but i'm not sure if it'll be too big to sit in front of to do work? )

1920x1200 - 24inch ( The most $ but seems to be have more space due to pixel count, and not too big to sit in front of.. )

any help would be great, and not there is no rock solid budget, BUT i want it to be less then $450 canadian.

sitting that close to a 27" screen for a long period of time will make your eyes bleed

I would look at something 24", Full HD, with a 2ms response time.

something like Illyama, or Samsung ( i currently use a bx2431 synchmaster and its lovely ) or even DELL i have heard do nice screens ( can anyone confirm )

Samsungs are on the net for around £200 uk, which comes out at about 320-340 Canadian???

just my thoughts.

Thanks for the quick reply

yea, i was thinking that 27" would be a little too much, but how about 1080 vs. 1200 i know that the higher resolution is nice to have, but for the extra 100-200 , should i :S

also can anyone find a 2650x1440 or 2560x1600 monitor for 450-550? and that's aviable in canada? cuz i have been able to find anything like that

If you have any plans for gaming buy 16:9 (1920x1080 or 2560x1440) cause everything in the gameworld is 16:9 now!

Also 16:9 is recommended for Windows 8.

16:10 is being phaced out so not something to buy in 2011.

Thanks for the replies, i do have a NCIX about 30min drive, so I've been looking at their stuff.

I see that u r all suggesting 1920x1080. But I think I'll wait a little while (at least september) and then decide because I would really like to find somewhere with a 1920x1080 and a 1920x1200 side by side to make my decision.

Again thanks for the feedback

Don't ask who we are, we are shining display, always, keep shining!

Yeah ideally 1920x1200 is good, but only in the games that aren't going to cut parts of the image off (see the nice big thread about resolutions).

In reality however, and bearing in mind price, a 24" 1080p monitor is the way to go. I'm sure there used to be marketing hype and still is, but most of the game I see coming out are designed with 1080p resolutions in mind, and also you save a fair chunk of money.

27" is too big imo, 24" is just about right for me anyway (or 23.5" depending on bezel size).

Finding 1440x or 1600x monitors is also going to get quite expensive.

Are you into 3D gaming? If so, ASUS VG236H, or if you aren't, the VG236HE. Its a great monitor, plus you get 120Hz, which, seeing as you have a 580, is something that will actually be useful during most games, but also on the desktop 120Hz is a lot more easy on the eye (I'd never go back to 60Hz willingly, but I have to when I use the laptop/netbook

).

The HE model is about $310 CAD.

Now if you fancied spending about $40 extra, you can get just about the best 24" around, which is the Dell UltraSharp U2410. Its 1920x1200.

It might not be the greatest for gaming with a 6ms response time, but the colour is pretty much unmatched by most if not all other 24" monitors out there. So with the 580 you might find yourself turning on the V-Sync a fair bit (I end up doing that anyway to stop stupid frame rates in quite a few games, and then I disable V-Sync when using FRAPS and stuff).
