Hey guys basically i play CSS ( Counter Strike-Source ) at a decent skill level in the UK and i am not happy with my FPS on some maps so i would like you guys to help me overclock my PC and get more FPS!

My specs:

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 4000+

Mobo - Asus A8N-SLi

Ram - 1GB Samsung Ram

PowerSupply - OCZ 520w

Graphics Card - Radeon x800GT

Please help me overclock as i am sick of getting bad FPS when im playing and getting owned... :(

Is my PC good enough to get overclocked?

Can i break my computer?

Will it improve my FPS in game?

I dont know much about computers so please help me guys!

Thanks In Advance!

Ive asked many people about that, but in CSS you dont need a good graphics card. You need a good CPU, so I would like to Overclock mine!

Well you've certainly got a decent enough motherboard for overclocking.

In short what you need to do is enter the BIOS, find the section where you can increase the FSB (front side bus), and start increasing it by 2-5mhz at a time. Each time check your system to see if its still stable (play a bit of CSS etc). if you find that it's not stable, then increase the CPU vcore up to the next available setting and test for stability again.

This is only really touching the surface, so try searching the forums as well - there's plenty of very helpful guides.

BTW, do you play on the OC3D CSS servers at all?

Ive been reading through alot of the guides and it helps but i really dont know much about comps so im just trying to take it all in.

How do i enter the BIOS ive been there before but i forgot now.. :(

And nop ive never been on that server.. i asked for help with overclocking on IRC and some guy suggested your IRC channel and from there i got the forum link! Give me the IP and ill hit the server some time!

So i go into the BIOS option and just up the FSB, how do i increase it by 2-5mhz? Do you just click to up it or do you have to enter the numbers?

And isnt there anything else i have to do?? Or just go into the BIOS straight away and change it?

Thanks for the help so far!

Ive just been into my BIOS but i cant find the section where i increase my FSB i looked for Front Side Bus but i didnt see it anywhere :( Can you tell me where it is and should i be looking for FSB in the BIOS option or is it called something else?

Also what number is the FSB likely to be?? Say for an example if its 1.500 do i up it to 1.502 or 1.520. Please explain this part to me im confused :S

OK i went to my BIOS options again and i think i found it!

BIOS > Advanced > JumperFree Configuration

Overclock Profile [Auto]

X Overclock Options Disabled

X N.O.S Options Disabled

X CPU Frequency 200.0

X PCI Express Clock 100Mhz

X DDR Voltage Auto

X CPU Multiplier Auto

X CPU Voltage Auto

X PCI Express Synchronization Mode Auto

Guys is this what i am supposed to change???

If so could you please tell me what to change to what! Please i really want to overclock my computer.

n

Overclock Profile [Auto] <----Change to manual

X Overclock Options Disabled <---Enable

X N.O.S Options Disabled

X CPU Frequency 200.0 <--- thats your FSB

X PCI Express Clock 100Mhz <---leave that as it is

X DDR Voltage Auto <--may need bumping up while ocing your ram

X CPU Multiplier Auto

X CPU Voltage Auto<- will need bumping up when overclocking

X PCI Express Synchronization Mode Auto <----unsink if possible

I would say you need to upgrade your graphics to see a marked improvement in CS-S.

If you want to overclock though and have good enough cooling, I suggest you start by using the AI booster that should have come with your disc to have a look at the temperature you are currently running and try out the performance mode which will help you to limited overclocks and see if your temperatures gets out of hand. Aim for 55 c max on the CPU and 50 c on your chipset. Overclock at your own risk though and move up in small increments as Nayden suggested.

Once again im a bit confused - how do i know what to change CPU Voltage to when it has no number there :S Same goes for the other ones how will i know what number to put there when there is no number there... :S

Would you like to OC your ram with you CPU? 1/1? or do u want to set a divider?

And i dont have a clue, which ever one is easier lads. I dont know much so keep it as simple as possible please.

Once you change the Overclock profile to manual it will allow you to maunaly set all the values.

'Auto' simply means it is left up to the motherboards bios to detect the settings.

No-one will be able to tell you 'use this, this and this setting' as every hardware combonation is different. But ill give you some ballpark figures for overclocking A64s.

CPU frequency: increase this at 5mhz intervals. Test for stability, then bump it up another 5, repeat untill unstable.

DDR voltage is probably best left at auto for now.

CPU voltage start at 1.4v. then when it becomes unstable take it up one graduation (either 1.425 or 1.45 i suspect, depends on the board) Don't go higher than 1.5v on air for 24/7 use.

Your memory devider will be stored in a different section of the bios should think. It may be labled any of Memory frequency, memory bus, memory speed etc. It will have the values auto 266, 333 and 400 at least. For stressing your cpu (as it says in teh guide) use 266. then when overclocking the memory you will need to go higher.

Somthing else you will need to search the bios for will be the Hypertransport multiplyer. This can be referd to often as the LDT (lightning data transfer). You should set this at x4.

WOW i am totally lost now it seems so hard to use the BIOS :(

Cant i just use the Ai Booster instead? I found my motherboard disk and i found the Ai booster on it so i installed it!

http://img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=aiboostersm7.jpg click on it to make it larger

can you please tell me what to up on here and how much i should up it!?

and is it still as good as BIOS and will it affect the speed of my cpu??

I have a big problem now guys!

I upped the CPU External Frequency from 200 to 215, on desktop and internet its fine but when i play CSS my computer just restarts.. i dont get it does that mean it cant handle it? is it overheating?? please tell me whats up! right now its 2.58GHz.. http://img294.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cpuzqs0.jpg

However there is another problem, now i cant open AI Booster! i get this message ----> http://img294.imageshack.us/my.php?image=overclksn6.jpg Please if somebody knows how i can get this program working again please tell me because i need to put the CPU External Frequency down i think as my computer keeps restart after i play CSS for 5mins or so.

ok thanks for the help so far lads!

I dont get this part tho :(

i cant find the memory anywhere.... do i need to overclock my memory aswell??? cant i just leave my cpu overclocked?

also LDT? dont see that anywhere is it very important to change to x4?

Now i seem to get it a bit more the more FSB you put you need more voltage so it doesnt crash.

How far should i go with the overclocking and should i go to the full 1.50Votage???

Guys i upped the Bus Speed to 210 and the Voltage to 1.465 and it seems fine but as soon as i go to 215 it starts to crash so i changed the Voltage to 1.50 ( which is the highest i get ) and it still crashes is there something im missing or is that just as high as i can overclock my computer?
