Help me build a PC

Max price range around £400... Just wanna see what good performance I can get for a good price.

My current specs are:

AMD 64 4000+ OC'ed @ 2.83GHz

ATI Radeon X1300

1GB DDR RAM

Asrock 939 mobo

X-blade case

Onboard sound

Ouch. £400 in todays market from a 939 based pc, u`r gonna be looking for either all new stuff or throwing money at keeping the 939 going.

If u got an agp slotted board, u`r gonna need a new gfx card, and with a more up to date mobo, u`r gonna need memory.

Are u looking to form the basis of a great pc, spend £400 now and have scope to make it awesome l8r in the year ? Or is it £400 - and that`s job done ?

I will always be upgrading it.. I was thinking of just getting another gig of ram, s939 AMD x2 and a new GPU.. And my board is PCI-E

Hmmm, with a pci-e u do have nicer options.

There are some fairly cheap 939 x2 or Opteron processors out there, I still don`t feel they`re as cheap per power as they oughta be, but never the less, u can buy either as fast as is available - or go for a reasonably good cpu and concentr8 more bucks on leaning towards an 8800 gts rather than an 8600.. swings and round abouts. (something like an 8800 will of course work for u in the future if u decide to upgrade mobo/cpu/mem in the future)

1 immediate thing to do is to bank a section of that monies to make sure u`r setup has 2x 1G mem sticks in it. If u already have a 1G strip, try and buy a match for it. Or if u got not aspirations of pushing the ram, u could just get value ram. Think gpu will be the prize purchase here.

I reckon, 2x 1G, 8800 gts and something like a 4200+ x2, should leave a bit of cash left over incase u`r psu doesn`t like the journey ;)

Reckon probably a 3dmark06 score of 7.5-8k with that. Maybe a little higher with some tuning.

Sounds good, I do have a 1gb stick atm.. So i'll maybe fork out some money for another stick (pretty expensive due to it being DDR)

I think my PSU is 450w atm so that'll need updating for a 8 series. 4200x2 sounds nice. Should keep me going for some years.. Then when I get some cash flowing in i'll go to update. ;)

What's better in perfomance, x2 or Opteron?

Timmy, my current 4000+ is OC'ed @ 2.83GHz (2.4 stock) running nice and stable.. So I hope so ;)

My birthday is on New Years eve. So I could save some of my Christmas money and put that together with my christmas money.. Buy myself a nice new moniter, mouse and keyboard. And maybe a bigger HDD.

I'm thinking of selling my GTS... Tis the evga - in the sig... Nearly new tbh, thinking low £200's...

Just thought I'd put that out there

Maybe, if it's still for sale near Christmas ;)

I think my rig will end up like Chudleys rig

I like the TT sharks aswell but I don't like the mesh on the side.

EDIT: What are better, AMD 64 x2 or a Opteron

Come on guys. You can get a packet for £400

CPU

Mobo

GPU

Ram

Totaling £401 inc shipping, which you don't have too pay (so - £7).

While it may not blister 3Dmark scores its more than enough 95% of applications.

Fair doos there Ham!

If you follow Hams suggestion and then bought another HD + nice looking case (to sell on) you could flog your current PC to someone for a fair price and get a better PSU with money to spare towards new monitor. :)

The way I would do it though - as you already have a 1GB stick, if you manage to find the same stick for sale, I'd buy that and then get an 8800gts. The 8800 should be future proof, and then you can upgrade CPU + ram later on.

It depends what you use your PC for mainly...

Imaginary reps to Ham tbh.

I was totally blinded by the 8800 gpu taking up cash.

Bet he`d need a new psu too, meh maybe not.
