hey guys

this is a weird one.

recently (as of about 2 weeks ago), ive gotten low fps and high pings on my jedi academy game.

im used to nothing higher than 50 ping and nothing lower than about 100fps on jedi academy.

now i get about 100 ping and 30-100 fps (yes, rather erratic).

ive done spyware scan with spybot + adaware SE, did an AVG malware scan, tried going thru my programs to see if nething was unusual, checked server pings (if i do cmd ping command to game server it get nice sweet 40-50 pings as they should be).

as soon as i get in game.........BAM..........low fps high ping.

im running wirelessly atm, but ive been running wirelessly for about 6 months now with no hassles, ive got full strength on wireless.

tried updating grfx drivers, still doesn't solve issue.

strangely though.........when i look at system restore, i can't find any system restore points................even the one i made prior to installing the grfx card drivers.....its like this month has completely been wiped bar about 3 points which the system made (from the 20th april...)

CPU is fine and not overheating, RAM is cool (haven't done ram check as of yet)...

a few days ago i was getting BSODs in regards to nvatabus.sys, but i uninstalled the ata drivers from nvidia, and reinstalled them, haven't got anything unusual since.

theres nothing out of the ordinary in the even viewer that i can see.....apart from it only goes back to the 12th april...

HELP! lol

Try the following commands to make sure your game isn't screwed

\r_dynamicGlow 0

\cg_shadows 1

\rate 10000

\snaps 20

The first two are known to cause low fps, and the latter two high ping, if they aren't set properly.

btw for those who don't know, Jedi Academy is a Quake 3 engine game, so if you have experience with similar problems in other Q3 engine games, any solutions to those may be applicable here too.

i know it sounds obvious, but you arent just joining servers further away are you?

im the server administrator/owner for my server.

the server is in germany, and i have an average ping of 50 at all times (apart from these last few weeks)

also, that would just affect ping, it shudn't lower my fps by a factor of 5-10 at times...

my rate is 25000 (as is set on the server)

no other settings have been changed ingame in this 3 week period...:/

can you guys think of any programs that i can use to monitor the net usage + program usage in xx period of time?

i'm just worried in regards to the system restore thing..... - i haven't cleared the restore data manually.....

ok.........ive found someone else with the exact same problem........

the only thing i can find that we have in common is that we both run folding@home....

do you think that f@h would be able to do that to an opengl game + wipe restore points?

Have you tried doing a traceroute to see if the routing has changed?

I know when I was on IDNet they were routing european stuff thru a overloaded server. The ping was 50 in the day and 200+ at night time (when it was overloaded)

Until it was fixed...;)

FYI: if theres a problem with your server - it can cause low FPS and high pings. Its far more likely that your provider has a problem with the server itself - i know you say you ping it fine, but thats not everything...(and i would know, being a GSP myself...)
