right!

really annoying problem here.

received all my gear from aria today to put a clients build together.

and physical memory as stated in the BIOS is 4GB and in windows its 2GB

I have attached a screenshot of this "hardware reserved" memory from resource manager.

any suggestions on how to fix this?

I've never seen that before but mine says 2MB and it says that it is for the BIOS and some drivers for other peripherals. Maybe something is wrong there?

Mine currently just says 1mb hardware reserved, I don't recall ever seeing more than 1 or 2 mb reported over several different machines.

Something odd going on, maybe a setting at the driver or BIOS level that's not right?

Have you put the ram in proper positions, i.e. the slots that would be optimal for the amount of sticks you have - consult the motherboard manual to see about memory placement.

Also check if there's a wrong setting selected in the bios - try default settings if you have changed anything.

Also quick note, you do have 64bit right?

On a related note, I notice that certain benchmarks, games etc. will report my total video ram as anything up to 4gb, my card is a normal 1.25gb GTX 570 incidentally.

Though benchmarks/games might report this, I've never seen more than 2mb reserved in resmon.

My money is on some obscure BIOS setting.

its everytime i set it too ddr3-1600mhz in the bios, if i set it to auto it gets the full 4GB :/

its a MSI 990FX-GD80......

auto doesnt get the spd data at all, it just sets it to 1066mhz and 8-8-8-20

That's bloody odd, have you tried using XMP mode to set the ram timings?

I wonder if, for whatever reason, the system is in effect disabling one bank of memory due to a perceived problem? Maybe resmon reports this disabled ram as "hard ware reserved" because it can see it's there but not access it?

I've set memory to XMP on three separate systems now and it gets all timings etc. bang on. Without it the memory tends to default to a lower speed at best (so 1333 rather than 1600) or at worst it screws up all the timings too.

no option for xmp profile :/

maybe i have a poop stick of ram.

Did you get a matched pair? Sounds as though 1 bank is being downclocked for some reason. Try booting with just one stick and then the other stick. Have you manually set the voltage default is normally 1.5v, but some memory needs 1.65v. What memory is it?

Memory normally down-clock themselves even if they can run at much higher speeds. I think you have to set it to the capable speed manually, but obviously in this case it's causing a problem.

Hmm, basically the same as mine but a different heat spreader.

Possibly one of the chips is duff and cannot run at it's rated speed? Are there any BIOS updates available for that motherboard that report improved memory compatibility?

Also, you say you've set the voltage to 1.5, I'd have expected that to be fine on auto...i.e. 1.5v on auto.

Weird sh*t for sure my friend!

Check in MSconfig under the BOOT tab > advanced options. At the top right there is a maximum memory box, click the box to activate it and set it to 4096, press ok and then restart. That may or may not fix it.

This might sound weired but there was someone else who had this same problem a while back and he tried everything to fix it and it with no luck, he said he was just about to do a fresh install but when he checked his cables he found one of his SATA cables on his HDD was loose and when he pushed it in properly he got the full amount of RAM again.

Just an Idea don't know of any thing else that could be causing it. Usually hardware reserved RAM is for the onboard graphics on the motherboard.

when putting sticks in both 1 and 3 2GB is only available. Could it be a dud motherboard DIMM slot?

Actually, a couple of years back, I was working on upgrading someones laptop. Basically it had a single 1gb DIMM for 1gb total. Simple.

I added a 2gb DIMM in the FIRST slot, moving the 1gb DIMM to the 2nd slot (laptop supports up to 2gb DIMMS) and I get a total of ... 2gb System memory, oh it's not recognising the old DIMM in slot two, I think to myself. I swap the DIMMs around...2gb system memory! So, it's seeing the FULL 1gb of the 1gb DIMM plus HALF the 2gb of the 2GB DIMM. Damn! lol.

It turned out to be some weird limit in the BIOS. Digging deeper Windows did know it had a 2gb and a 1gb DIMM, it could confirm the timings etc. it just couldn't use it. To this day this laptop can only use 2gb of it's 3gb. I was tempted to pop W7 on there (it came with XP) but I don't really see this person any more & they'd not be able to tell the difference anyway, it was just for my satisfaction really.

Just thought I'd share that [deep booming voice] TALE OF THE STRANGE [/deep booming voice]
