hi.

messing around with my primary harddrive as im going to reinstall windows later today and resize the main partition at the same time.

wants a 13gb windows partition but partition magic 8.1 gives me this message when i go above 8032mb.

this partition crosses the 1024 cylinder boundary and may not be bootable.

can i ignore this message ?

does it make any difference if i change the size in partition magic or use the xp installer cd ?

it only has to be compatible with xp as i dont run any other os or intend to.

Good Night

I always just use the windows install cd to partition. If you have stuff on the HD that you don't want to use then you have to use partition magic or the like. As far as I can remember you don't have to worry about that message.

the harddrive has been emptied and backup so deleting the 2 partitios i have is not a problem, only never encountered this problem before so got a bit curious about it.

I use Acronis Partition expert for all my partitioning work, it's never failed me. I've heard of this error with earlier versions of PM, but not with version 8. I'd backup everything and then ignore the warning. This error typically doesn't apply to Win XP, only earlier OS's...they wouldn't boot if the 1024 cylinder boundary was exceeded. You should be fine Raven, if the worst happens, you'll probably just have part of the partition invisible to Windows. But I still think you'll be fine :)

the entire 153gb of data has been moved onto 2 other harddrives or burned out so on that angle im safe.

but will try and se what happens just for fun.

if it doesnt work i should be able to delete both partitions with xp installer cd and create 2 new ones.

i will however use acronis to backup the partition when windows is installed incase the audigy2 -> softmod audigy4 fails.

but thanks for the answers, never heard of this limitation before.

before i forget it again.

changed the size way far than the 1024 boundary which wa at 8gb and the partition is now 12gb and windows loaded just fine, reinstalled windows and have had no trouble at all with it :)
