Guide: Simple Fan Mod

Hello, This guide is pretty simple and tells you how to convert a molex splitter to a cable that slows your fan's down.

If youve got a spare molex splitter laying around, then you are all set....

Take the red wire, and teh black ground next that and snip them off right at the molex.

Then, the black ground you just snipped at the top, cut off on the base of the splitter where the ONE molex goes in. Repeat for other molex.

Then, splice red wire and leave about 2/3's of an inch of bare wire exposed. Do teh same for the other molex. Then cut off the yellow wire on both molex's about an inch down from the top. repeat. then splice the remaining wire connected to the molex, and connect to the red wire. repeat. when finished, twist bare wire together.

It shoudl look like thsi, but i did one connector, as i messed up on teh other side. lol,

Then wrap electrical tape around bases and bare wire.

Then I daisey chained my two rear fans to it, and now they are very quiet! Here is the finished product.

NOTE, this does raise your temps quite a bit. My load temps went from about 35ºC - 38ºC to 38ºC - 43ºC. Right now im loadin at 41ºC.

My video card idled at 43ºC, now at 48ºC - 49ºC.

Good Luck! :)

You could string both the 12v and 5v together, but I wouldnt reccomend that on a LED fan. I'll try that sometime, but not in MY pc.

the 5v line is actually a -5 volt line and that is actually what you are doing. the 7v mod whcih i have written a guide on. only difference is that yours involves a funky wire and a splitter so thats why i have not said anything. i thoroughly enjoyed reading this guide howver i thought i would point out your mistake.

Are you not just splitting the power between 2 fans? Or are you merely swapping the higher voltage cable for the lower voltage? I can;t really tell from your description, and the images are not showing up for me (bloody work proxy!).

Seems a bit pointless. You could simply wire in a pot and have full control over the fan speed (DIY fan controller for a few cents)...
