heya fellas. im looking for a gtx 680 but the cheapest ones i find available are 400 pounds (im from uk). anyone know anywhere were i can find it cheap. also thinking of getting an amd 7970 instead. i know they both perform on a par but ati is soo much cheaper...! but also nvidia supposdly have better driver support. if anyone can please give me there experiances with either. cheers fellas!

7970 1GHz Edition > 680

^ This. The 680 is kinda pointless really as the 7970 is faster and cheaper, and the 670 is about 3-5% slower than the 680 but is £100 or so less. So really it's a choice between 670 and 7970, depends on which is cheaper, faster, cooler, quieter etc...

Do normal 7970s not overclock to 1GHz, Pexon?

I think they are capable of doing so, not sure though

Yes, but you look at the ones that come in at 1GHz stock clocks, seem to OC further than the standard 7970's!

Go with your pocket.

I'd suggest a 680, but in all honesty the performance difference between the mid to top end cards is so laughable, I'd just get the card you can afford.

They both trade blows now.

680 has better 3d (although more restrictive) and physx (if you care)

7970 has better multi monitor support (eyefinity is more user-friendly than surround)

Longevity-wise they are the same

If it was me atm I'd get a 7970 because of the price and free games.

Overclocking on 680s is also very little fun. The only 2 you could overvolt were the msi 680 lightning and the evga classified. But as of afterburner update 2.2.4 (if you download it ;)) overvolting support on the lightning is disabled. New classified's also don't have the connector for the evBot device previously used to overvolt them.

So, given nvidia's nannying and taking away overvolting options for all but the most batshit of enthusiasts (the kind that solder their own mods), I'd say steer clear if you like a bit of tinkering.

But that's not with the 7970 at the same clock, is it?
I could show my mid-end card beating a 580, but that's with my card flat out and the 580 at stock.

i think it depends what resolution and type of games you're going to be playing, that should be considered to and future proofing before you need to upgrade again. I'd personally go for the single most powerful card you can get your hands on. that way you won't need to upgrade for a long while. thats just my personal opinion tho. I like to have high end stuff
