GTX 480 now for £169.99 or wait for next gen of GPUs?

Gtx 480 are powerhungry, hot and loud.170£ is half price, but why not get another 5850 and x-fire it.You could find a decent 2nd hand 5850 for 90£ or less.

Were could I find for under £90? I don't have a good enough PSU!

So it would be £90 + ~ £70 or £80 = £160-£170

Whereas GTX 480 = £170-£90 or so = £80

almost half the price to buy a gtx 480!

thank you

Hi,

A friend of mine just bought one of the refurbed 480's. He's put a water block on it right away but seems very happy with his purchase. It was to go with another 480 for SLi.

I think ~£170 isn't a bad price for a 480 - performance is very similar to a 570 (like I have) but they have the bonus of a little more vRam and an extra 8 ROPs.

They do perform very well but, as mentioned, under air can be a little noisy potentially.

If I already had a 480 (rather than my 570) I'd have been tempted by one of these to go SLi.

Just an observation: having seen my friends 480's (he had two in the past) under water...well, they were meant for water cooling in my view.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Best idea is to go and look at TTL's review of the 480's

That should put you off for good.

They really weren't very good cards so I would either choose something from the GTX 5XX series or just wait.

Fred.

Could always get something now and sell it off next year, but say a 560Ti or a 570 is a very good purchase, 580 outta your budget?

I've got 2 480's. 1 has a short warranty so I'd like a back-up.

Soon after 580 release SCAN sold alot of 480's cheap at £180-£200 for ASUS, GAINWARD & MSI reference cards + FARCRY 2. Frikin awesome deals
smile.gif
So I'm waitin to skip the 680's release (maby) and wait for 780 release and bag the 680's at £180 each

I hope

Yeah, the 480's work well - a bit of a bargain at the moment I think. Depends how bothered by noise you are really.

I still say they were meant to be under water from day 1!

My 570 gives comparible performance, runs cooler and quieter on air - all for around £75 more though...

Still...game loaded, headphones on = who cares if it's a bit loud

That really outlines why looking at the review(s) is a bad idea..
