It will probably be just faster than the 480 so that it doesn't hurt 1070 sales.

It is also coming in 3gb and 6gb variants. This is a clever trick by Nvidia. How do you combat the fact that the 4gb 480 only costs $199 without giving anything at all away for free?

You make a pointless card to pad out the price. I predict that the 1060 3gb will cost $199 or possibly more because of Nvidia tax. Maybe up to $50 more than the 480.

However, obviously that card will be utterly useless, as even at 1080p 4gb is just about enough and sometimes not enough.

That's the clever part though. Because the 3gb card exists you can then move on and release exactly the same card with 6gb of vram and charge up to $300 for it. And people will be able to rationalise the extra cost because reviewers will be pointing out in their droves that 3gb simply isnt enough VRAM any more.

THAT is how you sell crap cores for the most money.

Yup exactly. Remember - Pascal is simply Maxwell on steroids. Clock for clock there is barely any difference and that's mainly down to the GDDR5X on the 1080.

Right now you can pick up a 970 for about £220? something like that. The RX 480 is about to launch and all it really has is more VRAM and it will probably be gouged up to £220 at least.

Thing is? the 970 overclocks very well. The 480 doesn't, at all.

Then there's the higher end of the market. A few days back OCUK were selling the 980ti Strix for £359. They were also selling the 1070 Strix for £469.

And overclocked both cards have about a fag paper between them in performance.

None of these new cards make any sense at all. Not at the prices they're at.

Saying that though this usually happens. I bought a 470 just as the 570 and 580 launched for £170, down from £350. I put on a £25 cooler and overclocked it and it performed really well. Easily edging out a stock 480 and coming very close to a stock 570.

My next card up was a 6970 Lightning for £230. I needed the extra VRAM..

So yeah, usually when a new card launches they deliberately make the older ones far more tempting first. Usually so tempting that it simply isn't worth buying the newer card.

I had a 6870 for ages and only play at 1080p my eyesight isn't the best so full detail makes little difference to an extent, I can never tell the difference between high and ultra, so that's what i look for is a card that can run at 1080p at good fps and possibly do that for a few years as my spare cash each week is tight
