sys specs are

C2Duo E6300

4GB ReaperX Ram

Seagate Barracude 7200.10 200gb hdd.

Some gigabyte s-series mobo (pc world FTW!! :D)

8800GTX

Jeantech Storm 700watt psu

Any ideas???

I originally thought it was media sharing on vista but its not...

Its nothing i have running (unless something in the background is hungry for music files)

And from everything i can think of, its nothing i know...

Are you using Windows Defrag or a standalone package? The Windows one is crap, and the drive may be heavily fragmented. Not saying it is that but it could be? I had a similar problem with my media center's HD and I used Diskeeper and it sorted it out no worries.

Find something that will read the SMART of the drive, I think HDTach might, and see if there`s any alarmingly high error counts for anything.

Other than that - if indeed u have 50million mp3s and it`s fragged to heck, then u shouldn`t be supprized :p

only got 9000 mp3's

Use a defrag app like O&O's first

And I dont recall HDTach checking SMART, speedfan does though I believe

O&O's? Some abbreviations im unsure about....please enlighten me...

Iv just got me a copy of that Diskeeper recommended above and im running a scan now.

O&O is just another defrag program.

I prefer Perfectdisk, but i'm sure disk keeper will work well enough to see if fragmentation is the problem.

Cheers guys, its about half way through the defrag now...

And a little thing, my songs n everything else are all stored on my secondary IDE hdd which shows nearly no activity on the gadget im using....

So, all being well, this scan should sort it. I did have someone once before mention to me that it could be something indexing, virus, windows media player etc but i never figured it, just reformatted the last time. lmfao...

Some reason i think its just vista being an idiot. Or some update ruining everything, either way, we shall see with some of the solutions you guys have given me....

Any other probs i'll be sure to post... ;)

Mate you should go to personalise>screensaver>power management>cyhange power settings>change plan settings>change advanced power settings>hard drive>turn off hard drive after

Then set this to 'Never' by hitting '-'

oh, done that already, doing that defrag with diskeep has worked a charm!!

Cheers once again for getting me out of that annoying inconvenience guys. Loving you all..

New lost out this morning btw...anyone seen it yet? anyone else but me getting annoyed by the amount of questions they keep putting in my mind?!?!

AAAHH!!!...but i love it all oh so much.... :yumyum:

I had this with vista.. I updated the service packs.. Then.. wham it was sooooo slow for about 3 days..

then i turned it one day and it was back to normal, if not faster..

Im on vista, have been for a while and it can be a pain in the arse sometimes.

Im not sure whether or not to bother with SP1 for it as iv heard its a sod with alot of network card drivers and just drivers alone, so meh, reckon its worth doing or not?

My hard drive is going again this morning. Its grinding more than ever and its seriously annoying....

Any more ideas, or should i stop being so petty and complaining and just wait it out to see if it calms itself down???
