I am an Older person(50+) just getting in to the finer points of graphics cards

and i have a problem.I would like to get my nx6800 running a bit faster

but i dont know where to start,My core clock freq is 325 & my

memory clock is 600.The main problem as i see it is which one to start

with core 325or clock 600.If anybody point me in the right direction with

this it would be a great help.

Thanks All

Welcome to :anisx: mate! We'd be glad to help you boost your clocks up a bit :)

First what we'll need to do is get you some good drivers and then get Coolbits installed.

What ForceWare drivers are you currently using? Once we have determined that, download this: http://www.sysxtreme.com/showpost.php?p=21532&postcount=19 and add the included registry key. This will allow you to control your clock frequency among other things it enables.

Start with your gpu clock frequency first, and bump it up in 5mhz increments until you can go no further. Once you've maxed your gpu clock, move to your memory clock and try that in 10-15mhz increments until it's maxed. Then go and play games or run some 3dmark05 to get everything boiling. If you start to get artifacts or have lockups/sputtering you will need to start gently taking down your frequencies. Generally it doesn't take much to stop the artifacting and lockups, sometimes 5mhz can be the difference.

Lets us know, and welcome to our forum!

Fragtek.

Thanks for the quick reply,First off all i have hardpage se installed and running

nvidia 7801 driver coolbits is on.

Thanks again Redmist01

Welcome Redmist. I'm new here as well, but let me give you some options as well. When you say you're an old person (5+) I'm assuming 50+ years old (not 5+ years old, otherwise you're a child genius).

Is your graphics card a the MSI brand NX6800 by chance? MSI is the only vendor that makes the NX6800 card (which is just a glorified 6800 card as far as I can tell).

Now, before you go any further I think its only fair to tell you that overclocking your card and messing around with its internal settings will void your warranty. If you fry your card and the vendor doesn't replace it, don't cry to the SX guys.

Now that "cavaet overlock" being said, the good news about the 6800 is not just overclocking potential but 'unlocking' potential (which may actually be more beneficial than overclocking). The 6800 GPU is the exact same as the GPU on the more expensive and high end 6800GT and 6800Ultra cards. The only major difference is that the 6800 has 12 Pixel Pipelines and 4 Vertex Shaders while the 6800GT and 6800Ultra have 16 Pixel Piplelines and 5 Vertex Shaders. Now interestingly enough as the GPU's are identical those 4 missing Pixel Pipelines and 1 vertex shader aren't really missing....simply disabled. You can use RivaTuner to 'enable' these features. You can find RivaTuner on nVidia's own FTP site ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/RIVA/. You can also use RivaTuner to change the clock and memory speed on your card (thereby avoiding Coolbits). Like FragTek said, run some benchmarking programs and see if anything 'odd' occurs (like weird graphics showing up....known as 'artifacts').

I'd suggest starting out by now overclocking, but opening up the 4 Pixel Pipelines and 1 Vertex shader and running 3dMark2003 and 3dMark2005. Its not really the score to care about...more that the test completes without artifacts. Don't feel bad if you end up with artifacts. From most posts I've read with people unlocking the pipes and vertex, most were only able to unlock 3 of the 4 pipelines (but were able to open the vertex shader). That's still quite the improvement.

Once you know the Pipes are stable, start playing with the clock speed and multiplier. Its not unheard of to get a 6800 card up to a 6800Ultra performance level.

Good luck and let us know the results. And if you fry your card....oops. ;)

Zyxthior brings up a great point that I completely overlooked, and that is the unlockability of the pipelines on 6800NU's.

Good catch Z! You're bound get some SWEET performance jumps after unlocking the pipelines and overclocking.

Any questions feel free to ask :)

Thanks Zyxthior,

You guys are well up on this :worship: :worship: :worship: .Just trying to get 3d mark downloaded,

as for unlocking the pipes i read somwhere that the msi nx6800 trd 256 only had 12 pipes,

Glad i'm wrong. One thing i did last night was to try auto detect on clock frequency settings.

I set to manual overclock,2d changed to 3d,and clicked detect optimal frequency.

I got core speed 452 & memory 856. What do you guys think

Thanks again everyone :wavey: Redmist01

That's a healthy OC and a good place to start. Take that speed and run some benches to see what happens. If you don't get any artifacting or lockups see if u can take it a bit farther :D

Thanks guys... The only reason I'm up on this is I've been thinking about buying a 6800 to put in my Shuttle so I can bring it to LAN parties and play BF2 (my GeForce4 won't cut it anymor :( ). Two friends of mine have already bought 6800's and did the unlocks (3 of the 4 Pipes) and 1 of the Shades.

Redmist, the 6800 is advertised at having 12 pipe GPU because that is all that is enabled without using RivaTuner. The GPU does have 16...just 4 are disabled. The lovly theory of "Price Differentiation" in Microeconomics hard at work....

Hi Fragtek & All.

Just done benchmark test with 3dmark 2005 pro, First test, core 325 & memory 600 --(3d mark 3695) With core at451 & memory at856 --(3d mark5313)

Looks healthy yes ? Temp at 47

looks very good mate, temps look very good aswell.

btw i see you are from Manchester...city or utd?

if you pick utd we may get off on the wrong foot ;)

Wirelessly posted (Nextel. Done. |: BlackBerry7520/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

6800NU's are definately the best bang for the buck with all of the great software mods for it that pretty much turn it into a GT at a fraction of the cost.
