hi guys, sorry if its in the wrong section.but my freind has a problem.hes got a good pc,crosshair iv extreme mobo/nvidea gtx 285 2gb oc/samsung syncmaster p2270/amd 970 b/e.ok heres his problem.when he plays black ops/mw2 upon level start were you pick ur class it freezes sometimes then screen goes black then his analogue/digital flashes in the corner he says then it goes to desktop the 5 seconds later goes back to the game with black screen with game sound in background eventually the picture comes back.do u think its graphics card related or monitor/dvi. lead going from graphics to monitor.thx to anmyone who has a solution:)(he updated drivers to the latest as it was happening on drivers b4 too.

56C load can’t be realistic, maybe try with a different program(gpuz, hwmonitor,..) If he can’t find the problem, RMA. What settings is he playing at?

he,s playing full settings, then he tryed AA x4 still the same, max temp is 69c guess he needs to change grfx card, thx for your time bro:)

This sounds very much like a bad oc, and lemme explain a bit.

As the pc starts up, the software tells the gfxcard it has oc settings - so it implements them. You look into your oc software, and sure enough all looks well.

You run something demanding and the real work starts as far as the 285 is concerned. If the oc is bad in any way, it will produce an error for the drivers, often a pop-up balloon will say "kernel blah blah" and you can either be back to desktop or weirdly in the game.

BUT, at this point the card is set in, what can only best be described as, "safemode".

For example, if your 285 is clocked something like 740 core, 1450 memory, 1600 shader - that will be how it will run when it's asked to do real work, a 3d setting if you like. On desktop, or 2d mode, it will favor something like 400 core speed. This is to pacify all the women out there who moan about wattage - as enthusiasts - go figure.

However, if too much of a demand is asked of the card, which doesn't necessarily mean heat, it will crap out as described above. After this failure, it will try and stick to a "safemode" of 300 core.

(these are 285 figures, other cards from all manufacturers have their own prefernces)

If the game is allowed to continue running by the drivers, it will be like using a card with a 300mhz core.

Only fix is a reboot. But then the cycle will continue.

If it only happens in certain games, it could be that that certain game(s) ask something different of the card. Maybe it likes more gfx-memory or uses shaders more, anyway, that can answer why when you think you stress a card, it seems ok - then fails in a game or other benchmark.

Best thing to do - uninstall any oc software, MSI/evga/ati/whatever, get the newest drivers, probably 266.xx, select the clean install tick-box. Re-install the msi/evga oc tool software.

.. and if it keeps failing, tune down the oc. Take it to the reference 648/1245/something ?? or whatever it is. If it fails on that - something else is wrong.

This card idles at 50 or so for reference, 40 or so with a 3rd party cooler. Heavily overclocked you'll get 90+ with a reference, 80+ with a 3rd party cooler. Turn the 3rd party on 100% fan and it'll go down to 75 or so.

Idle in "safemode" the temps drop under 40, and the max temp will be 50 or so. <<< this is where I think I've ID'd your problem.

The card craps out with a bad clock before it over heats usually. Unless of course the cooling is faulty.

(any suggestions in there that I had someone elses pc over the weekend and benched the crap out of their 285 ? lol)

I don't think it's the screen tbh, sounds to me like the drivers or a bad oc, since it only happens in cod..

hi ok he tryed lowering to 630 mhz from 666 still happens but more frequent.not only on begining of maps but randamly in game! he bought this in november 2009 from nova tech would they replace it u think as he says bfg have no website? thanks

Kinda sounds like an OC problem, but you could try this.

I just recently crossfired my 5850's, I never had problems with COD's (cod4, mw2, black ops) before i crossfired, but now i get horrible lag.

Apparently, mw2 has some serious multi gpu problems, best solution I found there is to disable xfire/SLI. On Black Ops it worked after messing with some settings, but these settings are different between patches the game has.

Open the console in game (probably your "|" buttton.), type r_multigpu and see what the number says. This number is the one that has changed in patches, so just try another number and see if it works.

If that doesn't help, disabling xfire/SLI might help for black ops as well

Crossfire seems to be very buggy. And yeah i hate that lag, try diabling AA usually eliminates it.
