Just sifted through two recent comparisons of CPU's for gaming - the conclusions were revealing enough to say that although there are improvements - spending more money on your ram and Graphics card than your CPU will reap in more benefit in GAMES than upgrading your CPU.
If you game primarily - A Sempron 3000 coupled with a 7800GTX and 2GB of ram would be enough to play most games in 1280x1024 with 4xFSAA - I guess AGP users can also play with a XP3200 (mildly overclocked) and a 6800Ultra (or upcoming 7800GT AGP) with 2GB of RAM at more than acceptable framerates
