Hi All,

First post here so be gental!

I'm looking to buy a new AGP X8 Graphics Card. I've looking for the best that you can buy for around £100. I know most people may have different opinions so all are welcome but i'm just looking for a little advice as its been a while since I bought my last one and i'm a little out of touch.

I saw this one and am thinking it looks pretty good but I would be wrong:

Opinions on this card?

My computer spec is as follows:

Abit Uguru AK8 Mobo

Athlon 64 3500+

2GB DDR 400 Dual Channel

Running Windows Vista Home Premium

Thats a good AGP card..

But wouldn't it be best if you upgraded your Motherboard to a board with PCI-Express.. and then get a faster card? :p

Yeah and i've been thinking about that. Would the PCI-E version of the same card be much superior? I imagine it would.

I'd then be shelling out for a new mobo and gfx card though.

The card I linked would run any game at the mo though would it not and keep me going for a while?

Personally don't bother with the mobo upgrade - 939 is good but it doesn't support DDR2 and it's getting long in the teeth

I'd get the card and save up for a new system if I were you :)

Do you mean 939 mobos don't support DDR2? I'm sure i've seen some that do :S... I'm probably wrong though.

Well if I did upgrade the mobo and gfx card now I would just sell my current ones and claw back a little of the money.

Thing is I just upgrade mine bit by bit rather than doing the whole system at once. Next i'd upgrade would be the CPU to an Athlon 64 x 2.. Haven't decided when or which one.

X1950 Pro PCI-E was £70 somewhere. I'll try and find a link for you.

EDIT: Well I was slightly wrong, X1950GT 256MB PCI-E for £70 http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=16459

There was an X1950 Pro for that much but it was an Aria superspecial.

Is the Pro much better?

That the one you're on about?

To be honest I'm thinking the X1950GT 512 DDR3 PCI-E would run any game I could throw at it for the considerable future?

Thats all I need really?

Yeah I would have thought the GT would do you ok...as I said as long as you aren't playing at a massive res

And yes you can get mobo's with DDR2, but they're not the greatest - you may as well just have the card

You mean just get the AGP?

Sorry to be a pain but one last question.

For the same price are there any better AGP cards? Either Nvidia or ATI?

The card that would compete with that would be a 7900GT or 7900GS but I think they cost more

Cool.. Thanks for all your help.. :)

I've just been looking and noticed 939s are basically obsolete.. When did that happen :o

So basically its not worth me going staying 939 unless I got this, the only feasable upgrade unless I bought an AM2 mobo.

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(15184)AMD-CPU-Athlon-64-4000-64-bit-1Mb-L2-Cache.aspx

I would be fine for a while, hardly worth upgrading to something that wont be able to be upgraded any more when the next upgrade comes.

So I spose its time to take a look at some AM2 mobos and processors.

Just to give you my view on it..

I have a 939 agp system currently with a 6800 gs and am looking to upgrade the graphics card. I just scored an Asus a8n sli off ebay for 30quid which seems a bargain and looking at getting either:

Or a 7900 gs. Not any of the 8600's as they seem to suck!? That to tide me over until I can afford a whole new dx 10 system with all the bells and doodaa's.

I would go Am2 but the most expensive thing there is replacing the horde of RAM I have at the moment.

Long live agp :)

Well i've just been looking around and you can get PC6400 pretty cheap. I'm probably just gonna sell my computer and rebuild now i've spent some time looking around.. The only tough part would be choosing a motherboard as i'm still not that clued up on the new ones and then matching a gfx card.

Funny how just looking for a new gfx card and how turned into building a whole new computer!!

"the 8500 GT performs on par with the age-old Geforce 6600 GT - not encouraging"

lol

Surely a massive

up from nvidia that we can buy a better performing card for so much less? And really are the dx 10 compatable 8600's going to be able to run dx10 at a decent rate?!
