Gigabyte K8NE cannot use 3gb ram?

Hi all, im currently using the Gigabyte K8NE motherboard with 2gb corsair 3200 LL pro ram which runs just fine. After installing vista ulitmate ive realised i kinda need 3gb. I bought another stick of 1024 of corsair platinum 3200 with low timings to be similar to my current ram, after putting it in on its own it worked fine but after adding 1 stick of the old ram the pc would not detect it. i tried everyone combination and it just would not detect all 3 sticks at one time. The manual sais it supports upto 3gb and i have 3 ram slots. IF anyone can shed some light on this weird problem id be greatful!

cheers

phil.

Where is the readout of sub-3GB being shown? Windows XP has problems detecting over a certain amout (either 3 or 4gb) so check the count in your BIOS

Bios will only detect my 2gb orginial ram and not the extra 1gb stick. Even if i take out one of the pro bits of ram it will detect 1024 insted of 2gb being inside..

Hmm, that sucks, I don't know what to do then sorry, it sounds like you may have a bad ram stick though, have you tried putting just the new stick in? If that isn't recognized then that stick must be bad, and the problem.

Yep it runs 100% fine with just the new stick. add one of the old ones and its as if the mobo disables the new one and auto uses the old lol..confusing. Im sure somone will come up with some kinda solution..

What are the specs off the two types of memory you are using? because if the single stick is of lower / higher spec, the motherboard will try to run one of the two types at the same speed as the other type........ if you get me. Which usually results in problems as motherboards have never been all that good at it. Try booting into bios and setting all your memory settings to something that all 3 sticks can run at, rather than 'Auto'

Hi mate glad to see you got on the forums here eventually.

The good lads will help you out here. Have you tried cpuz in vista, i thought that i had it working at one point. might have been in compatabilty mode

Tried looking for any bios updates?

whenever i try running the latest cpu-z it just sais missing driver or somthing and can only show a bit of info about my cpu not even all of it :/ i am thinking of getting a new mobo & cpu at the end of the month (hoping i can get my activation from microsoft) and hopfully i can use 3 sticks on a 4 slot board..

i checked my mobo's website and thers no bios update on there. All i can change in bios is a few cpu options for oc'ing.

I'd watch out using 3 sticks on a four slot, they can sometimes be a bit iffy as most new boards demand you use dual channel and therefore multiples of 2 sticks. Atm I'm running K8N-XP-SLI and it won't boot if the RAM isn't in multiples of 2 sticks AND if the HDD isn't in a RAID setup. Next time I'm going Asus.

A solution I can offer which has worked for me with motherboard problems in the past is a BIOS flash. Gigabyte seem to release a new BIOS every five minutes with loads of 'fixes' in every release but they seem to work... until you find another problem :p
