Hello everyone my first post here

Over christmas i was burgled and as such i need (and want desperately) a new pc

My budget is approximately 950 pounds, not including a monitor/keyboard/mouse

what i currently am looking into is :

- 500 GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue

- 32GB OCZ Onyx Series SSD

- Corsair 600T

- 750W XFX P1-750S-NLB9 Pro Core Edition,

- Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4

- 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600)

- Intel Core i5 2500K overclocked @ around 4.7ghz on air?

- 2GB XFX HD 6950 bios unlocked to a 6970

with bios unlock

Next year i'm hoping to add another 6970 for crossfire, 3 1080p monitors for eyefinity and possibly another 4gb ram. also do you think the 750w psu will be enough for 6970 cf?

any other ideas about components will also be much welcome

Id look at a different SSD, Kingston is always a good place to start, look for the V+ series. 32GB is no where near enough for a win7 install unless its just a shell tbh, 40gb is tight but tbh imho 64gb is as small as you should get.

Avoid XFX PSU's look for Corsair or NZXT tbh.

The Vengance ram isnt great, and just one stick (refering to what you said on YT) isnt really the best idea.

If you want to overclock youll need a stonking good CPU cooler.

Yea I would avoid the OCZ SSDs they aren't that great at all. Look at Kingston's V+ or Corsair's Force SSD they are better choices.

In terms of what case to choose it comes down to what you want from a case, I personally really don't like the Corsair 600T. It just doesn't seem to have the right features for being a Midtower at that price. You may wanna take a look at some other midtowers, for example the Xigmatek Utgard, Cooler Master CM690 II Advanced, or a full tower like the NZXT Phantom. But it's your choice.

Regarding memory I would go with some dual channel memory from Mushkin, for example the Ridgeback line. Make sure to get some with decent timings. Please don't use just a single stick, since that is going to be significantly slower.

If you want to overclock you will have to get a decent CPU cooler. Take a look at the Noctua NH-D14, which is the best air cooler at the moment. 4.7 Ghz should be achievable, if you know what you are doing, but remember the Silicon lottery, so I wouldn't take it for granted.

Also get a quality 750-850W PSU, from for example the Corsair HX series, or if you want white go with the NZXT Hale 90 series of PSUs. It is worth spending a little more on a good PSU, because that is going to be a crucial point of your system, and you don't want to have it die or break.

well, working around the 950 pound budget

i think i've decided to go for :

- 60GB Corsair Force F60 ssd

- 850W Corsair HX Series

- i like the 600t case: i can see how it's a bit of a rip off but i can see myself not getting bored of it too easily (not much to get bored of) and it looks like a sturdy build

-for the ram, realistically i'd like to go for 8gb but ideally have 2 slots left for potentially another 8gb if needed (you can always try to plan ahead)which is why the ridgeback line isn't ideal (cant find 2 4gb pieces)

- additionally the Noctua NH-D14 is clearly a good cpu cooler but would a corsair h50 (about the same price) cool it any better?

Oh yeah do u know the disadvantages of unlocking the 6950 to a 6970?

from what ive heard the disadvantages are:

- memory has to be taken beyone specification (5000mhz) for equal performance to 6970

- card runns hotter

- 6 pin power sockets taken beyond specification (6970 has 6pin+8pin power)

not sure what else - any help would be great.

The only reason id do this is because it seems stupid not to get another 50 quid of performance but if you've heard of 2 many negativves i'd like 2 hear

Warranty is lost, and well by the time u come to get ur second 6950 ur first one will probably be dead!

Id look at the aria 2500k bundles if i was you and looking at getting a GTX 470 instead

(I just dont like the new ATI cards hehe)

The 6950 cards have dual BIOS, right? If the flash doesn't work you can revert to the other BIOS (I've heard a DIP switch on the PCB?). Seems pretty simple to me and worth a shot if you have a 6950. I wouldn't buy one though expecting to get a 6970.

Even with the dual bios you risk bricking the whole card.

I honestly haven't heard of one bricked 6950 yet. I'm sure it happens, but the risk really isn't that great. This is just like the 9500np unlocks back in the day. There's a thread at techpowerup where this all started, pretty promising results. The people with failed unlocks have been able to revert back without issue as far as I see.

You are right though, there is always the possibility.

Its not worth the risk in my opinion especially that you break the warranty the card could get spoiled by some other reason and then ur stuck with an expensive paper weight. The 6950 and 6970 have differnet boards unlike the 465 that could be unlocked to a 470. IMHO if you want a 6970 just pay the extra 50 quid.

It's still 50 quid though. Besides, modifying a PC is part of the fun. Hell, I've more than once thought about buying an x2 just to unlock it to a quad for fun. There's risk in most things enthusiast in a PC. Watercooling, overclocking, etc. Most people have their PCs plugged into a basic surge protector. That does nothing for brownouts. Every PC should really be on a power conditioner to negate any power related risk.

Risks are fun!
