Gaming over a WiFi network

Hi All,

I am an IT manager and look at wireless networks as a last resort even though we use Cisco Aironets!

Anyway - can online gaming be done on standard home WiFi networks or are the pings too high? I know there are a lot of outside factors e.g. distance from router, type of walls, interference etc but whats the general experice for people here?

Depends on the game and how consistent your connection would be. For example a mate of mine in the states has a wireless connection and his ping in counter strike would spike randomly and would affect his gaming but playing things like civ 5 or other games it would not have such a big impact.

Personally I would not touch wireless for gaming but that is just me.

A few years ago, wifi did used to be too unstable to get a consistently good conection. Back when we were on 802.11g wifi, with max speeds of 54mbps, and new technology, connections were not as stable and so most pc gamers avoided wifi.

I think now however, with the new(ish) N technology, where we can get consistent speeds of like 150mbps, and even up to 600mbps if you want to spend a fortune this is not the case anymore.

Wired ethernet is generally a constant speed of 100mbps, unless you have gigabit which isnt that common. But, it obviously never fluctuates. The new wifi does not fluctuate much at all, and only usually will if it suffers from interference by other wireless devices - which doesnt ever really happen!

So nowadays, wifi is fine really, I've never really had a problem with it when gaming on pc or xbox. But the people who tried wifi 5 years ago tend to be very against it now because of what it was like in the past, but it is perfectly fine now.

depends really, on my N 300 one that i have on my lappy on which i sometimes play wow and cod4 i get around 50 ish ping, which is more than playable, on a lan i get 30 or less on same router.

aslong as your not too far from router and its decent quality with decent bandwidth for yourself then youll be fine, but you can always carry a patch cat5 with you

Well... In high school I would piggyback off my neighbors WiFi and play Counter Strike Source... Always had a decent ping...

(across the street opposite corner of an intersection, good 100 feet at least from my desk too his router)

{WiFu} brother.

Depends on the router and the incoming speed from ISP. My wired gets around 60mb download and 8up, wireless I get about 30d and 4u so half but more than enough. If you are really concerned Netgear (or belkin) just released the 802.11AC which has a speed of 1.4gb, plus you need a compatible dongle.
