Now that the dust has well and truly settled in the aftermath of that low-key event in Los Angeles. It's time to take a deep breath and get your head in the game with the next big event in the gaming calender - Gamescom.
Europe's biggest trade fair situated in Cologne, Germany, is just as important an event as E3 is in the gaming stratosphere. Where E3 reveals those badly kept secrets and demonstrates next-gen hardware, Gamescom goes about showcasing those reveals in truer light with developers having just that little-bit extra time to prepare their prized assets. These assets are nearer completion than what they were at E3 and the general public will get to see just how this years biggest games are shaping up, not to mention that Gamescom usually has a big say in what will be on your Christmas list.
Already in its fifth-year in existence, Gamescom is proving to be a critical time for developers as an event of this magnitude just several-weeks before their years of hard work are thrown into the critical and the ever-demanding eyes of the world. It's fair to say, that while the anticipation builds-up for the consumer, it's squeeky-bum-time for developers.
Of the 600 exibitors, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will headline this year with Activision Blizzard, Bethesda Softworks, Bigpoint, Deep Silver/Koch Media, Electronic Arts, Konami, NCSOFT, Riot Games, Ubisoft, Wargaming and Warner Bros. AK Tronic, astragon, Bigben Interactive, bitComposer, Caseking, CD Projekt, Fishlabs, flashpoint, Gaya Entertainment, Kalypso Media, Korea Creative Content Agency, Mad Catz, Medion, NVIDIA, Razer, Roccat, UKIE and Turtle Entertainment have also confirmed their participation.
NVIDIA will be unveiling its NVIDIA Shield for the first time in Europe in addition to providing the graphical grunt behind some of the most anticipated games currently in development. Visitors will be able to get their hands-on-time with Splinter Cell Blacklist and Assasins Creed IV: Black Flag in NVIDIA's gaming booth.
The number of visitors this year are expected to reach over 270,000 during the event that runs between August 21st and August 25th, and If you are fortunate enough to already have a ticket, you can look forward to playing games like; Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Batman: Arkham Origins, Arma 3, Elder Scrolls Online, Fifa 14, Forza Motorsport 5, Gran Turismo 6, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Mario Kart 8, PES 2014, The Sims 4, Thief, Titanfall, Tom Clancy's The Division and Warface to name just a few.
The coveted Gamescom Awards is also in its final stage with 64 nominations, with the winners selected from the German and International panel of gaming media experts:
Best PC Game Nominees:
Best Online Multiplayer Game Nominees:
Best Role Playing Game Nominees:
Which game(s) deserve the OC3D 2013 award? Make your decision(s) in the comments below.
For me, Battlefield 4 and Titanfall will be charging up my tank of gaming mojo power.
Titanfall was one of those games that really caught my attention at E3 in the persistent cloud of all the annual rehashed, re-branded nonsense we've been accustomed to seeing. I think this will do well at Gamescom and indeed come release time.
Battlefield 4 promises a lot. Dice always make promises they can't seem to keep even if their jobs depended on it. However, I can smell something special about BF4. The aroma of sweet perfection is a distinguished kind of smell and, one you tend not to forget quickly. Let's just hope what I can smell isn't emanating from the hills in Wales.
Tickets are still available to this years event, although some sessions/days are now sold out. Tickets and pricing can be found here.
If, like me, you don't have a ticket to this years event, you can keep up-to-date with live YouTube streams from popular channels and you can download the official 2013 Gamescom App, available on iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store.
