FX5500 help please

i am a mac user but i really wanted to play eve online and some CS 1.6 (mabey even CS:S). so i went out and got myself a second hand PC...nothing special. i soon found out that everything about the PC was (almost?) decent eccept the video card and i did not want to spend a fortune on a high end video card. so i got a 5500FX. i installed it...and there was no video going out to the monitor when i turned on the comp. so i opened it up and found that the back end of the card was not in the AGP slot fully(my bad )...i put it in firmly and restarted the comp. perfect! everything seemed to be going fine untill i tried playing a game. of course cs 1.6 ran perfectly as i expected but i noticed that there were various artifacts...just some discolouration and flickering but i assumed that it was just cs. so i went on to open up eve online i knew somthing was wrong because the title screen was also discoloured and flickering. i installed the latest drivers first but when i noticed the artifacts i tried the drivers that came on the CD...both had the same results.

however it is only the rendered3d parts that are affected the OS is completley fine.

any suggestions?

maybe try updating the to latest drivers. But it sounds like your video card has bad memory on it if it is artifacts try to run another game. Or try

First try taking the card out and wiping all the drivers clean and then reinstalling.

If that doesn't work see if there is a firmware update for the card, that may fix the problem.

If it doesn't you've already tried the newest drivers and your card needs to be replaced. I don't reckon u spent much on the card?

no the card was not very expensive, if i cannot get it working by tomorrow i will take it back and exchange it for a 6200 AGP...any thoughts?

6200 > FX5500

The 6200 beat my old FX5700 by quite a margin so it would be well worth the exchange.

ok i got the 6200 same thing

i went and changed it for another 5500...still did not work. so i changed it for a 6200. this changed it only slightly. i am using an AGPX4 slot but it says it is backwards compatible. do i need some sort of extra driver.

There's actually a voltage difference between 2x/4x AGP slots and 8x AGP slots. This might be where you are running in to your problem and getting the artifacting. If you do a quick search on google about running 8x cards in 2/4x AGP slots you will find a HUGE number of people that have problems with it based on the voltage difference.

I would ellaborate more usually but I'm late for work, hope this helps. U might want to try and find an AGP 4x card... The PCCHIPS mobo isn't going to be compatible with much as far as 8x goes I don't think.

AGP v2 works at 2x/4x at 5v

AGP v3 works at 4x/8x at 3.3v

some cards can automaticly adjust to work with 3.3v and 5v but i believe any generation 5/6 cards are to new for that function.

some tnt2 m64 cards had that function for example.

working!

hey guys i got it to work, all i had to do was to change to AGP speed to X1 with the registry.

this is how to do it (with nvidia cards)

1) Open Regedit

2) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global

3) If there is no 'System' key here, make one. Just right click on the Global

key and choose New > Key. Type in the word System, and hit enter.

4) Now select the new System Key, and right click on it and choose New again

5) Now choose "DWORD Value" and type in ReqAGPRate.

6) Set the value for the new key to 1

(you will need to reboot for the changes to take effect)

this may help some others who are trying to run newer cards on old an mobo!!!:yumyum:

try X1 then X2 then X4 then X8 at least one will usually be stable (the value in step 6 is the agp speed).

i have heard that the AGP speed will not make much difference for games...however it will effect your 3dmark score.

{edit}: oh yeah one final thing i looked at the website: http://radel.inet.net.nz/m810lmr.html (that is where i got the information above). and on question 16 there is a question about there being no open GL support in XP without new drivers. what drivers would he be talking about i.e. VGA drivers...AGP drivers...video chipset drivers? just need this cleared up thankyou

openGL is an API (Application Program Interface) which is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. Put simply an API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. A programmer puts the blocks together. openGL was developed by nVidia, but Microsoft have developed their own over time - DirectX (currently at version 9.0c, soon to be 10). So in answer to your question, openGL refers to your graphics card drivers, and it assists with vertex shading, rendering, filtering, rasterising, sprites and alpha blending etc (I'm not gonna confuse you by explaining these). But, more and more games programmers are coding using DirectX, rather than openGL, even though nVidia still provide support for their API. Hope this helps clear things up a little

hey i might be being paranoid but could this damage my card at all since there is a small voltage difference.

i have been monitoring the temperature levels and it is idoling at 40ish and even after playing a game for ages it will not go above 60 so i am not worried about the temperature.

just asking someone who is in the know if using this card in this old mobo while i wait for my new one will cause it any harm?
