FX53 isnt working on mobo

Hi all

Bit of a noob here, so I'll apologise in advance. Basically Ive got a ECS KN1 SLI Lite mobo with an AMD64 3400. Runs sweet enough with no probs. I've now got an AMD FX53 2400 and if I install it on the mobo (which can handle FX chips) nothing happens when I start it up, apart from the fans starting up. Ive also installed some 2x 1GB Corsair DDR XMS3500LL Pro. This memory works fine with the 64 chip. Could the memory be the prob or have I got a dodgy FX? I got it from a mate in the clan Im in and he wouldnt sell anything knackered or dodgy, I think lol

Thanks for reading

First of all I'd hop over to ECS's site to see if there are any BIOS updates for your motherboard.

If it still doesn't work after that, try installing the FX chip and then clearing the CMOS.

If it still doesn't work, then i'd begin to question the chip.

I've checked the ecs site and some of it is admittedly right over my head lol. I've checked the bios against their latest update and it seems the same. I havent updated/flashed bios so im a little nervous about doing it anyway.

Will try the CMOS option. Is it a lot of hassle to do it? again all this BIOS CMOS stuff is new to me and I dont wana mess me pc up

Im just emailing my mate aswell to see why he was selling it in the first place, think he said it was a mobo issue

If your computer is overclocked currently, or any settings have been changed in the BIOS, it's possible that they just aren't working with the different processor. I highly suggest XMS's suggestion of clearing the CMOS, this will more than likely fix your problem if the chip isn't bunk.

K dude, will try it tonight then................................................now, wheres that mobo manual? ;)

Well I feel like a complete muppet :( just a reply for ECS, I needs ta update my bios. Soz guys my bad.

Now I know what the prob is, how hard is it to flash the BIOS through windows? (I aint got a floppy drive) or isnt it poss?

It all depends on what BIOS is used on the board really. When you turn on the machine does it say "Award" or maybe something else?

Theres a program called WinFlash that should work to flash ur mobo through windows. You could also burn a bootable CD with Awdflash and ur new BIOS on it and do it through DOS.

Yeah its Award. I have looked into flashing before (the nice policeman had a word with me bout it) through windows but the step by step guide was poorly translated and the pictures they provided didnt help

It should work providing your board is the V1.0A and the BIOS is V1.1E which came out in September. If it isn't, flashing the bios is not biggy, can be very easy in fact (depending on motherboard).

Before you do anything like that though, try taking out all the un-necessaries so you're left with your power supply, motherboard, FX53, ONE stick of ram, graphics card (if you haven't got on board graphics on the mobo) and something to boot from. Reset the CMOS and try again. Ive actually got the manual for this board already having accidentally downloaded it while trying to help a friend who owns an ECS, so.....to save you downloading the manual:

Just seen previous posts lol. if youre flashing the bios make sure the protection jumper seen below is set to allow you to flash it :)

Yeah I reread that reply I had from ECS and Ive got version 1.0E and I should have version 1.1E. It does seem a simple thing to do, but coz its a new thing and if I mess it up its gonna cost lol

I've flashed boards hundreds of times if not thousands and I have yet to have a flash go bad, u'll be fine!

yea ive flashed like 5 different motherboards numerous times and nothings gone wrong. even if it does you can just reflash it lol

Not always mate. If for some reason you lose power during a flash it will 9 times out of 10 result in a BIOS chip that will need to be sent back to the company for replacement. An incomplete BIOS flash won't even POST, leaving u stranded. That's really your biggest worry, and I've never had the power go out during a flash. Hey, maybe thats a good reason to buy a UPS!

eh United Postal Service?!? joke!!! lol

Excuse the noobish questions again but is it a simple case of making sure when me pc starts up it boots from cdrom? and making sure I got the bios update on a disc? Thats if I go with the DOS route

Pretty much. I have to admit being a fan of winflash tho - it's much easier and does exactly the same thing.

ok then, you know any links to guides on how to use winflash? basically ECS has a very basic guide on how to use it, but do I tick any of the boxes on the left hand side of the window? does it make a real difference if I dont?

Do you have a link to their guide?

I normally tick all of the boxes, and select to clear cmos too - u might not wanna clear cmos on urs tho.
