FX 9590 on MSI 990FX GD65

I have the noctua NH-D14 cooling my 8320 as to upgrading the cpu i'd save your money and buy a better cooler

I'm not going to change the platform, the question was if the cooler can do a decent job of keeping the 9590 within acceptable limits and if the mobo can handle the CPU. I know it's not as fast as whatever intel has to offer, but it's faster than my 8320, which can only handle 4.4 without stupid volts. If they drop the price below 200, it seems like a good investment.
Cheapo z97 mobo with 4690k would be around £210. ;)

Don't forget a new copy of windows ;). Oh and sufficient cooling for overclocking.
The 9590 is (contrary to popular belief) quite nippy and will give better performance than the i5 in certain situations.

Well he does have a H80i. And I thought separately bought Windows, even OEM, activated with a different motherboard.

He mentioned playing WoT, for which AMD is trash. Stock vs. stock the 9590 beats 4690k in synthetics, when both are overclocked I doubt it can even manage that.

Afaik you get 3 clean installs/ HW changes (the latter only triggers with MB and/or CPU, changing the disk, after cloning it to the new one, did not). At least that's how it was with W7. But after changing the MB in my home PC I didn't have to reenter the key like it was with W7, so perhaps this crap is gone with 8.

Right, the little nuclear reactor is in, runs nicely, feels a lot quicker than the overclocked 8320, doesn't pass 56-57 in full load, which is surprising, really. The H80i doesn't get too loud, it's nice and quiet. The only thing is I can see the lights flickering in the house when I turn the rig on. :P Pretty happy with the 9590 so far.

You only need a new copy of windows if you do not have a retail key. Its only for OEM 7 that needs a new one. W8 afaik doesn't have this anymore.

Right, just giving you guys my experiences with the 9590 after a week of pretty intense use. Under the H80i and with a tiny dot of Arctic Alumina, the CPU never goes past 55-56 C, even in intense loads. It's stable, and it does feel a lot quicker than the 8320 @ 4.4. All in all, for £173 it's a pretty good deal. The only issue I'm having is in prime95 it freezes after a few minutes of the blend test. Does the other two perfectly, for hours on end, but the blend one it fails almost instantly. No errors, just freezes. Works perfectly fine with any other load, blu-rays, games, music production stuff, benchmarks, you name it.

The only issue with HWMonitor, OpenHardware Monitor, Speedfan and the likes of is that on occasion they can give a false thermal reading on FX dies, sometimes 15c out (low) depends on the version, also as the FX series don't have dedicated thermal diodes and rely on AMDs algorythm to measure temps, Idles can be taken with a pinch of salt, it's the 100% load that appears more accurately. All that said if you want the best reading as said above AMD Overdrive is the one you should be believing.

Yes, AMD Overdrive, also checking full load temps with Coretemp, just to get that second opinion. It does boost to 5Ghz, but very rarely, and only in light loads that use a maximum of two cores, I've seen. On the other hand, even at full load, it does not throttle down from 4.7, which is nice.
