FX 9590 on MSI 990FX GD65

Hey there forum. I play WoT a lot, which seems to be very processor bound and since I read that AMD might cut prices on their FX 9 series CPUs, I was thinking it might be a good investment. However, I have two questions I was hoping you guys could help me answer. First, would my H80i be able to handle the 9590 without getting too loud and would my motherboard (MSI 990FXa GD65) be a good home for the CPU? Thanks for any ideas. Cheers.

I play WoT a lot too and i wouldn't say more CPU bound. Its rather even. My 7950 maxes it out and its always at a higher load than my i5 even if i turn v-sync on so it stays at 60fps(i did it to experiment). But your better off with keeping your 8320. Its not really an upgrade to go from that to a 9590. Just overclock it and it will become the same.

While AMD are indeed dropping their prices in September, it is only for the retailers not for the end user.. It will be down to retailers to lower their prices also, I can't see them being that much cheaper to buy in the end.

To be honest I can't see them not knocking the price down, I honestly can't seeing them seeing well so why wouldn't they. Especially for budget gaming rigs pre built

I'd go for a 9370 at most. TBH WoT at the moment prefers intel slightly however an 8320 doesn't struggle with it so a 9370/9590 will fly through. They did announce a while back that they'd be working on proper thread usage.
Motherboard wise I'd honestly not risk it and I'd get the best AM3+ motherboard you can get. Cooler wise it'll be pretty noisy so you'd want to upgrade that as well.

TLDR overclock your 8320 as far as it will go. The 9590 is surprisingly fast but alot of effort. If all 8 cores get used that is, which is never.

Found this for benchmarks. AMD is will generally use only 3 cores but even then an i3 cpu is beating it. Also perfers Nvidia cards but i think thats due to more TMU's on those cards.

A 9370 should oveclock to 5Ghz easily since they are the same cherrypicked chips as the 9590.
You could also save a lot of money by going for a 8350, there are quite a lot of people that have managed 4.8Ghz on that chip, which isn't bad at all

Thats not likely these days, the 9370 is a better than average 8350 that can't do 5ghz on acceptable volts (with a few exceptions). The chance of getting an excellent 8350 that'll do 5ghz is also very unlikely now.

I'm not going to change the platform, the question was if the cooler can do a decent job of keeping the 9590 within acceptable limits and if the mobo can handle the CPU. I know it's not as fast as whatever intel has to offer, but it's faster than my 8320, which can only handle 4.4 without stupid volts. If they drop the price below 200, it seems like a good investment.

I know that but I was just giving you what you could expect out of it. It was more for a baseline. IMO it's not worth the upgrade. Buy an AIO now and OC the current 8320 you have. No sense in possibly getting a better OC'ing CPU for that money. You could probably build a small cpu loop for the same price as getting the 9590! The OC the shiz nit out of it!

[The 9590 costs as much as a 4770k in Greece....]

That MSI board should be able to handle the 9590. Although I've heard that there are issues with the 9590s. They get the VRMs sooooooo hot so better make sure you keep a good airflow in the case.
I don't think that a 8320 can go further than 4.5 he's lucky he reached that speed

Ordered the 9590 for £173, should be here tomorrow. I'm thinking if it works properly without any instability issues and without me having to change the H80i to something more expensive, I'll be pretty happy with the purchase.

If you've got decent fans on the h80i it'll be noisy but should be ok. Depends on the 9590 in question. You could end up with one that does 5ghz at 1.4 or something amazeballs
