Future Proofing

Hey ladies and gents, just want to ask a simple question to get your opinions.

Futureproofing, do you belive it is possible to futureproof your PC to play any game maxed out and decent frames in the not so near future? (as in 2-3yrs)

I ask this for 2 reasons, i have a budget rig and my editing rig. specs on the budget rig:

C2Q Q8300 3.25ghz

MSI P43-C51

4x1GB DDR3 1333mhz

9800GTX+

2x250gb HDD

The Editing Rig:

Core i7 980X 4ghz

ASUS Rampage III

3x4gb DDR3 1600

HD Radeon 5870 2GB

Speak ya minds and tell me which you belief and what you believe is futureproof.

No such thing as future proofing when it comes to PCs there is always new and better tech around the corner the only thing you can do is buy the best of what is available now.

GPU wise though if you went with something like SLI 580's I doubt you would need to upgrade for at least two years but saying that there will probably be a single card with that performance released within two years as well, especially when GPUs going 28nm end of this year or early next year.

futureproof? no!

as a nextgen game dev, i foresee DX12 within 2yrs, especially as new cpu architectures are being released more often.

in 4yrs, we have gone from dual core to hexacore (and hyperthreading)

in the next four years it will be very common for enthusiasts to have 16core+ rigs, and with next month's release of bulldozer a new breed of overclocker will emerge

your editing rig is a good base for a great overclocker, and as an editing PC it should last three 3yrs, but do not expect it to be highend in 3-4yrs time

with the two biggies, intel and amd, bringing out new chipsets and different sockets more often than justin beiber has hits, even the best rigs will be yesterday's news more often

I disagree here however my view of playable is sitting at 25 FPS with max settings man like their FPS no lower than 60. I reckon that a 580 would survive for atleast 2 years doing max settings. The gpu is the main one when gaming but other than that cpu something mid>high end would manage

many businesses "future proof" their hardware and software plans to about 5-7 years(least that's what I was taught) so future proofing is possible but obviously there will always be a degree of diminishment to plan for

well i guess future proofing isnt really possible on pc. what you can do though is invest a little more on cpus, they tend to give you the necessary performance a little longer than gpus.

If you wanted it future-proof for 2-3 years, the GPU would have to be the top end (GTX590 or HD6990), the CPU makes less of a difference, but you would want it to be at least 4c/8t or 6c/12t or similar. Motherboard should be OK. And a good SSD of course, but the cheaper option is to keep upgrading HDDs or RAID them.

I believe future proofing is possible now.

A friend brought a GTX295 few years ago now and is only now looking to upgrade.

before PlayStation 3 and xbox 360 came out it was impossible but now every game out besides a selected few are console ports, Games designed to run on a 5 year old game console then simply have the software converted for PC use with no improvement in video quality, You see games out that say "Press start to continue" on the PC, "Press Y to skip"

It's disappointing to see but its what most games are now.

So yes I believe it is possible, for 3 years is pushing it but 2 I believe so.

Well future proofing changes.. and for some reason people can't understand that what you were taught 5 years ago in college is completly different now. Yes the new tech curve five years ago was every 14 months something new would be realised. There lie your obsolete time range for a product. WELL, as comes new tech there comes easier ways to produce better. The manufacturer gets better gear to make better gear. In lamest terms. And as of now the curve is what 4-6 months? And slowly will fall. Hell in the near future it could be every month something new comes out with bigger better performance then the last. It just all depends. Because as of now... manufacturers hold back on there tech to milk out every dollar. I mean not even a month or two after the 6990 came... the specs for the next years 7990 are here. So there is no futur proofing. All you can do is just deal with what you got for 2-3 years playing games at lower and lower settings as you go until you can't anymore. Then buy better. You can't answer this really... you will have two sides. But you can buy good and make it last.
