Cool :)

Have OC3D ever done a competition based on skill rather than luck?

something like the best modded case or the best howto or the best project log etc

maybe the active people on the forum would have a chance then

Again looking forward to them, nice suggestion Eq but we all have a chance the way it is as after all it is a competition and only those lucky ones get their names drwan out, that IS the fairest way IMO.

On the flip side it must be great for those who join up and win, perhaps it will make them hang around or be more active eh lol.

We've done a couple of semi-skilled competitions like 'draw a picture' or 'make us laugh'. Prizes for best modded cases is a nice idea, but generally the people with the best case mods are the ones who have the most money - and are least in need of a prize.

If you can think of another decent competition that's fair all round then we'd certainly be up for giving it a go. Pulling out of the hat can be a little boring...

Since this is an overclocking forum, and a gaming forum. Maybe a competition one way or the other. I know manufactures want to see huge participation numbers, but maybe risk that for once. Like, pick a number in 3dmark 01/03 or 05, that any one with a decent gaming comp can get. Then halve it ;)

Set so much time, everyone has to hit an exact number then screenshot, those who can get in the drawing for prizes.

What about OC3D CS:S gaming ladder or similar  :)

Would deffinately bring more people to the site (& the servers). Esp if people think they can win a gfx card etc. Altho you'd need some admins and a lot of organisation.

I agree a little with the best case thing that maybe people who have a brilliant case might be rich, but some people spend loads on their PC's without being rich.

I know some people upgrade once every 2or3 years (my last system was over 3years old)

High latencies for people in other countries and managine hackers would cause a problem imo.

People can photoshop it :P

Nope, they need to submit the benchy to the orb. Thats why 05 or 03 would be a good benchmark. Maybe even aquamark if your willing to set a goal at like. 50k.

Just make a demo using sourcetv for every official match and setup cvar protection etc.

You could say about cheaters for any game tournament appart from LANs.

Altho for the next compo, you could have it at a LAN? :)

I also hate the way people call cheaters hackers.

They probably haven't hacked anything in their life and are probably 13year olds who just downloaded the latest cheat to use.

I feel random draw is still the most fair way of doing it. CS:S imo is too damn unreliable in terms of hit reg lol.

Also a good point by XMS, its usually the people who dont need the upgrades that do the modding. I, myself cannot afford to rip apart a case to mod - not only not enough money but imagine what my parents would say...lol

Agreed 100 percent.

If you're going to judge people by what spec pc they own (or how good their case is), you're as bad as the people who spend loads for a e-peen.

I only suggested best modded case/best howto/best porject log etc as the people who are modding and who are adding to the community by helping others or writing how-to's etc are getting left out.

The whole competition thing atm I'm sure is only to get hits to the companies websites, but does that lead to sales

looking at the modded pc thing:

cheap case - £10-£20

few 120mm fans - £1 each (say u buy 3 - £3)

maybe a CC kit - £1

Spend your own spare time in the garage modding it £FREE.

A modded case with 120mm fans & CC & maybe sidewindow if you want for £20-£50.

You have to be rich

The main thing I was thinking was, by changing the type of competition you can bring more people and content to the community. Leading to sales etc that would last longer than the 2mins & 5 clicks (& then forget about it) the current ones lead to.

I'm quoting this as it really sums it up well.

Also with the gaming thing, any gaming tourny online could be seen as unfair or whatever (due to latency etc) and probably would be limited to EU, but the companies involved are in the UK.

If you want to moan about the games engine/netcode, everyone has the same game & is running the same engine/netcode so will all have the same chance.

Although i agree to some extend that you don't need to be rich in order to do a decent case mod, I've never seen a modded case that actually looked decent and cost the creator £25.

Now if you was to limit the spend on the case mod to say £50 then that would be much more fair. Otherwise its easy for someone to steal the show by pumping a ton of $$ into the project.

Yes, yes it does ;)

Well maybe the quiz should be a bit less guided - having to find the answers urself - but again, the main thing these competitions do is raise awareness of the companies = more awareness = more competitions

Am i right? :D

That would be more fair. I've seen cases that cost £50 and look amazing :)

There is someone who used to be in my RA3 clan who built a few totally custom cases for under £50.

My last case which I customised didn't cost me much either.

Cool :)

I personally just looked at the sites linked for a few seconds to get the info and then closed the window, forgetting about them.

But then I don't buy components on a spur of the moment as they are normally expensive.

Meh..not everyone is able to mod and stuff...that doesn't mean they don't participate in the community...it just means their parents are strict. What I think kind of angers some people is how new people signup just for the competition and win. I think we should have a post limit or something. If you want everyone to be able to win, then you can put like a post limit on prizes.

Example, in the last competition, it could've been like this:

8800GTS - Atleast 1 month membership and 100 quality posts

WC Kit- Atleast 1 month membership and 75 quality posts

500GB HDD-No restrictions

etc..etc
