From AMD and ATI to Intel and nVidia

Hi Guys,

Been using my current build for a few years and have had a number of issues around heat and unstable performance on both my 1100T and my HD6990 (Chosen at a time when I knew very little about what I was actually putting in the case).

The issues have gotten worse over time and now I'm starting the research and costing stage of my next build so any advice would be hugely appreciated. I'm currently looking at an AIO but I'm going to be looking to build a custom loop as a phase 2 project once the build is operational.

My current thoughts are at:

As for the questionnaire:
I'm based in Aus and am working to a budget of no more than AUD$4,000.

I currently have a G15, Razor Mamba and 3 1080p BenQ monitors that I've been running in Eyefinity at 1080*5760.

I will be needing a new OS as I'm going to repurpose the old one as part of a server build.

Primary use is gaming however CS (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects) will get enough of a use that they are definitely a factor.

I do intend on overclocking and this is going to be a clean new build.

Any feedback regarding choices or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:)

$4000 is a massive budget. For 2500 you could build the rig I want to build and add in Win7 Pro/Ultimate

(Case has changed to an NZXT H440)

You could even run Crossfired 290X

Edit - Mine of course is migrating the SSD's I already have. But for 4k you could buy the 2x512's as well as the Crossfire setup.

There's some nice gear there. But don't you think that you're throwing out some money unnecessarily?
Why not 16GB of RAM? Why not Win 8.1 (it's not as bad as you might think it is, as long as you avoid TIFKAM)? Why a Maximus VII Hero? Also there surely are cheaper PSUs than the one you selected!

Thanks for the replies guys,

I'm moving more towards Nvidia rather than AMD this time after some stability issues I've had with my 6990 that's lead to my GPU being outperformed by my partners mid ranged Nvidia and she hasn't had the thermal issues I've been having either. The PSU choice was made based on great experiences with Corsair gear and the AX series doesn't seem to have the same thermal issues that the have been reported regarding the RM series.

Just goto http://www.scorptec.com.au/ or http://pccasegear.com/ or http://www.mwave.com.au/?gclid=CNrb6...FUcAvAodd4AAUg and find what you are looking for direct and try and save some dollars researching it and try to buy it all from one place to cut down on postage costs and 2% surcharge at each different Etailer.

That's what my plan is, just using pcpartpicker as a quick way to make the list up. More interested in suggestions regarding the part list.

That's kind of what I was interested in getting your guys feedback on. My intention regarding the RAM was to create a RAM disk for Premier preview files and the like. It's also a cosmetic thing, I'm not a fan of empty DIMM slots, and I didn't want to commit to 4GB sticks and mean I would need to swap them all out for 8GB ones later. (And I'm a huge fan of the platinum's styling)

The MOBO is One of the things I'm umming and ahing about. I was eyeing off a number of different boards but aside from compatibility and overclocking availability, I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

Windows was just a familiarity thing. That and I didn't spend much time looking at windows 8 after seeing TIFKAM. I didn't realise I could get rid of it. Ha. I may need to go back and have a look.

As for the PSU, as I said above, I've had some good experience with Corsair in the past and if I've learnt anything from this site, it's that you shouldn't scrimp on the PSU.
