Computer spec :

Intel 3930k
Asus Rampage gene
16 gb
Ax 750 psu
GTX 680
nh-d14 cooler fans are on 12v

Iam running a small overclock on my cpu 4.1 from 3.8 at 1.195v vcore.
My ram is 2333 mhz and 1.165v.
Room temp 18-20 c .

Question :

i cant get my temps under 65c on the hots core no matter how low the voltage why is that?

Is there no point the voltage will be to low and it will damage the core ?

Is prime95 a good test for this ?

To me that does seem a little high on the temps for that voltage. Maybe try reseating the cooler and re apply the thermal paste.

What thermal paste are you using?

Also what case?

Prime is fine for stress testing.

I have a Fractal Design Arc mini and the paste it come with the cooler .

If the voltage are to low will it damage it the core ?

I am not too familer with that case but from what I have seen in pics I would imagine the air flow would be ok.

I would also imagine the paste you got was so noctua stuff and that shouldnt be too bad but then again I am not an expert.

Maybe try to reseat the cooler. Maybe there is too much thermal compound or the cooler is not sitting very well.

Also how much of a difference is in the temps between the hottest core and the next hottest? Like is the hottest 65 and the next 60 or is the next one closer.

I am kinda judging this off my own experience and while those temps are not hot per say I would imagine you could knock a few degrees off with that cooler for those volts.

To give you an example my hottest core was around 70C and average on all cores was around 65C on a H100 with similar ambient running 4.6ghz @ 1.35v so while the temps arent hot I would say you could get them lower for those volts.

As for the low volts. It shouldn't do any harm. Too little volts will cause a crash/hang while stressing and you just increase the volts a little bit more until you get a stable overclock.

Btw watch toms Z77 overclocking guide if you havnt already he covers a lot of the basics and while it is not x79 a lot is transferable.

One last question when you say the cpu is running at 1.1xxxx volts are you checking using a program like cpuz or just saying what you set the bios too because the cpu might be running higher volts depending on what you set your power settings in the bios too.

Sorry yes my ram is running at 1.65v .

All my voltage i sended to you are take for the bois.

I watched that video it was a great help thanks you and to Tom.

What method did you use to apply the thermal paste? If you spread it that could be the cause. Would be a good idea to just re-seat the cooler like B3rni3 said, and use the line method to apply the paste.

ok thanks of the great video it was great :)

ok now i had made a complete mess for the thermal paste :( and now i have fixed the problem after 30 min of prime95 max temps 63c

Thats a step in the right direction.

Did you get cpu-z and check what the volts are when running prime?

Also maybe get a pic of your pc up. Maybe there is something not quite right.

I prefer OCCT compared to Prime95 as a Cpu benchmark. Try downloading it and it will provide you with voltage monitoring and cpu fan speed. Here's a link to the download. Link

I download the occt tool and all I get is a error about cuppin it reading 200c so I think the sensor is bugged because hardware monitor is saying the same thing.

About the pic I will try to upload 2 are 3 but i have try before on this thread and they there very bad :( but is there anything u want to see are just an overview.
