Free Far Cry 3 with the Vector

what is wrong with ocz

I don't even know if it's still relevant these days, but back in the day when SSDs weren't that common yet, the OCZ drives were very unreliable. They had the highest RMA rates and they would just crash. I've also heard from some people that the drive kept working, but it just randomly earased all data.

It's kind of the same for the OCZ power supplies tbh, they're not very reliable either. So anything with the OCZ brand on it is frowned upon on this forum

my corsair drive sounds like that lol

All of OCZ's products are very hit and miss. They do make some good SSDs but I'd stick to Corsair or Crucial myself. Samsung are definitely coming up in the ranks now.

These comments sure make OCZ users feel welcome in here....

Then maybe like a few other companies I won't mention they should have a better RMA service and look out for their customers a bit better?

Reputations are made or lost on how you look after your customers. See the PNY debacle lately.

If you put out a bad product and then refuse to stand by it it will cost you.

Well I wasnt aware that OCZ had gangraped their entire customerbase so I feel pretty stupid for posting this thread - I wont happen again.
Im sorry for those who have had bad experiences with the brand.

Im just thrown off a little bit by seeing shops and reviewers still carrying/covering their products thats all..

They are cheap. That's why so many places are stocking them - but they have been cheap for a reason!

Having said that the latest generation OCZ SSDs use the Indilinx Everest 2 controller which is a big step away from the SandForce controller that caused so many issues. The Indilinx Everest 2 controller is a rebrand of the Marvell controller which has been so widely used on other successful SSDs like the Crucial M4.

What's the difference? Well you may notice that the most common trend in a range of SSDs is that the cheaper ones have a much poorer write speed than the more expensive SSDs even when read speeds are virtually identical. That's because cheaper SSDs use asynchronous NAND where better SSDs use synchronous NAND.

Synchronous NAND is like DDR (double data rate) RAM. It is able to process on both the rise and fall of an instruction signal. Asynchronous NAND can only do it once. The SandForce controller had the advantage (when it worked) of getting around this by compressing data is real time as it wrote to the SDD. That gave the impression of much faster write speeds but it also gave the SSD a chance to randomly loose data... which is probably why other manufacturers chose synchronous NAND over controller trickery.

Anyway, now that OCZ no longer use SF things are looking up for their SSDs, in theory. Build quality has been an issue in the past though but I don't know much about their latest gen SSDs in that regard. Hit and miss is a good description of OCZ I'm afraid.

I just grabbed a 128GB Vector myself, Much more responsive then my last 120GB Patriot.

Love it so far hopefully it doesn't blow up.
