Fibre Optic Broadband - Do Wi-Fi Speeds Increase?

Morning OC3D,

I'm thinking of upping my broadband from Sky Unlimited to Fibre, as they have a new router out that means you don't need some engineer to come round fiddling with your bits and bobs!

Do Wi-Fi speeds increase with Fibre, they don't do they? I'm just curious since the main connection I use is Wi-Fi, it will only really be the gaming rig and the PS3 that use the fibre optic...well the rig really, the PS3 can even run fine on Wi-Fi, just not great for when downloading a full game. But not bad either!

Yes it will increase with Infinity. You should see a transfer speed for your wireless in your wireless. Personally i dont use wireless as ive wired the house with RJ45 cables. Bare in mind the more wireless items around your house (this also depends on your neighbours too) will affect the speed and efficiency of your wireless too.
 
Basically there are two things you have to look at. Your internet speed and your wifi speed.
Lets say you have N Speed at 150mbit ( real speed maybe at around 100mbit ) and you have a 16mbit DSL connection. So if you change to a 100mbit fibre connection you could benefit from the 84mbit extra because it's still below your wifi.
Let's say just for kicks you get a gigabit fibre connection you could only use about 100 mbits or whatever the real speed is when you deduct the overhead of the wifi protocol.
It's that simple. One last thing. If you have like mulitple accespoints who are connected to the router with gigabit lan, they normally split the bandwith of your internet connection.
 
The fibre will really only be for the PC, just for gaming and downloading, always handy if I buy a game on Steam for example as I should get it faster.

Wi-Fi is what I use most but it's for my phone, iPad, iPod, Mum's Kindle Fire, was Netflix but I've cancelled that, erm anything else...just the usual really.

wireless N is rated at 300Mbps, depending how its setup.
although chances are slim of getting close to the 300Mbps.
still would mean if you got a gigabit connection the wireless could still manage the speed.
Although might mean needed to get a wireless device with better technology then wireless N.

the signal you get from your wireless device will depend on objects between the wireless device and the end device (computer, ipads,... so on).
Also does this mean your computer will be wired anyway?

Tou also could look into getting an AC router they are rated much faster than N, but will still be back compatible with N devices.

I'll look into new routers but I'm interested to see what the new Sky one is like first, the normal white one has been fine.
 
Thats fair enough i only mentioned it, as you said you wanted faster wifi. but having the availability for faster download speeds will help anyway

Cheers for mentioning it, the Wi-Fi speeds are fine with just Sky Unlimited (I'm not sure on numbers) but I was hoping they'd be even quicker with Fibre because that would swing me more into buying it, since I don't game often or even use the PC, I only really use Wi-Fi 98% of the time so if that's faster then brilliant. I know it doesn't take long to load Facebook or whatever but every little helps.

I'd probably know more about this sort of stuff if I could remember what I was taught in comms in college. :mellow:
 
Once you go Fibre you'll never and I mean NEVER go back to standard broadband :) I was with Talktalk @ 1.5Mbps now I'm with Plusnet Unlimited Fibre @ 75.86Mbps my laptop wifi is 8x faster than it once was but all the PCs are hard wired.

i had to do just that, as when i moved house virgin media dont do fiber in my area, so i had to go with sky i get 16Mbps now :mellow:
 
Really? I mean I'm happy with 16 but as I've probably said for me it's a frustration if you buy a game and have to wait for it to download. The Wi-Fi wasn't great last night, the bars stayed full but nout was happening at times but I think it's okay now, my Mum said it was fine on her Kindle this morning.
 
WOOOOOOOOOO sky fibre is the one! get an AC router you'll love it, i consistently get 4.2Mbps on the download, i cant complain at all, best decision i made!

Also that sky hub is utter wank!! im being 100% serious!

Is it about the same as the normal white one? The white one worked fine for me (I'm not network techy, more just plug and play) but to most of you it probably makes you cringe. :lol:

I'll have a look at some routers but not sure what I'm looking for!
