Failing Wireless

Yes... I'm really beginning to hate wireless... Anyways, I seem to have a curse or something, because I've had no less than 3 routers (I think it might be 4) wireless routers apparently go bad on me. The latest one (and I'm pretty sure most of them, though I can't remember) has gone from pretty much never dropping and having download speeds of about 100-200kB/s (less than my connection is capable of, but still reasonable) to dropping sometimes up to 5 times a day (in a time range of maybe 7 hours) and having download speeds of 10-50kB/s, the average being 20kB/s. Now I'm sure you can agree... that is utterly pathetic.

I think we can all agree that is quite a difference! Now it's been a while since I've had reasonable wireless (like, 2 months now) so I can't remember what I used to be able to get (heck, for all I know that top image is from my wireless, I can't remember cause I snatched it from the bandwidth thread) but I think it was at least 1500kb/s.

On to the part of other routers dying... My first one was a Motorola. Twas reasonable I think. Kept me going from a place that was farther from the computer room than I am now. Later I move to my room, works fine at first. Then one day it just stopped working. And not just wireless, it couldn't hold any connection. I mean, the computer would technically be "connected" according to windows, but you couldn't access the Internet at all. Second one was a Netgear. Pretty much the same happened to it. Well I thought so anyways. I recently tested it and it worked fine, except that it got the same speeds as the current state of the Belkin I'm using now. My third was a Compusa. Much the same happened to it, though manifested more in lots of a drops and slow speed.

Now you may scoff at the "choices" in router brands (choice... not really when it comes to my dad) but I find it hard to believe that we would get 4 craptacular routers in a row. Any ideas?

Get a 20m cat5e cable and a big drill:p.

Seconded

I used to have wireless and it was nothing but trouble, especially for gaming.

I know its not what you really want to hear but it is definitely worth it

I knew I forgot something. Heh, tbh, that is what I want to do, but much depends on what my dad lets me do. If I do end up getting a wire (gotta buy... <sighs>, don't suppose anyone gots a 50ft or so one? ) I'd have to route it under the house.

Regardless, I'm on wireless now, and unless I decide to move my computer to the computer room (which I really would rather not do), it's going to remain so for at least a decent amount of time. So, any ideas on the wireless issues?

Tsk. Well anyway, if its happened on 4 different routers i would suspect that is somthing else. Either your card or your streching the connection over too fara distance/through too many walls. Can you grab a laptop to test it or somthing? Maybe a wireless phone or somthing is interfearing?

I take it your using wirelessG standard? Maybe try out N?

And as nunzio said.

what about giving these powerline adapters ago, we have about 10 pairs set up in various schools and they can work really well. I'd try some, if they dont work then return them.

I'v loads of grey hairs from wireless, think about your problems, then think about wireless in schools. 30 kids trying to get on it at the same time.

Mystery solved (hopefully). It looks like the antenna for my wireless card was knacked in some way (not quite sure how). I decided to try a USB wireless thing I had tried before that wouldn't connect, but that was when I had encryption on and I couldn't quite remember the key. In my testing yesterday I had turned off the encryption, so I decided to try the USB straight and it worked "fine" (fine being about 150kB/s). So I went and snatched an antenna from another wireless card we had lying around and voila, worked just the same. So hopefully that problem is relatively solved. I'll probably still try to get a wire for myself though
