EvilWeevil : Project Air-Con

As my Conroe e6600 is apparently arriving today, it's time to start a new project :)

Firstly, the most important part, the name. Well, it's meant to reflect on the fact that it's a CONroe system purely AIR cooled....better suggestions gratefully accepted :)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "Conroe" - HAVE

Asus P5W-DH - HAVE

2GB Corsair TwinX XMS2 PC6400 - HAVE

512MB Asus Radeon X1900XT - HAVE

320GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 - HAVE

320GB WD Caviar SE - HAVE

580W HiperPower Type-R - HAVE

Samsung DL DVD+/-RW Drive - HAVE

Lian-Li PC-G71B with window panel - HAVE

Cooling:

CPU: Scythe Infinity - HAVE

VGA: Arctic Accelero X2 - HAVE

Well let's see... Fatal1ty is a waste of time and money, and I'm pretty sure the design has trouble with high heat levels, so maybe a no-no for an x1900xt. I'd say go with an Accelero or maybe the Thermalright Ultra V-1. For the CPU, we say a no-no to the Aquagate. The Freezer is a fairly solid cooler, but if you're willing to shell out enough for an Aquagate, go with one of the more major ones such as the Scythe Ninja, Scythe Infinity, or Big Typhoon. For the DVD drive I dunno how good LG's are right now.The NEC 3550 is popular as it's fast and cheap. Otherwise looks fine to me

Looks good mate, great build specs for sure.

Whatever u do don't get kit watercooling unless its a really upper eschelon kit from someone like swiftech. The kits from CM, TT, Zalman are all horrid. Just remember that the best air cooling is better than the best watercooling kit. Keep it air unless ur gonna do water the right way :)

Lookin good mate, ill be expecting some piccies of the progress!

Thanks for your swift feedback - I wasn't too sure about the CM kit either, now I'll definitely stick to the Freezer and air throughout, I'll do proper water cooling when I upgrade GFX in the new year.

I've got a pretty new LG in my current rig which has done really well so I'm going to stick with them.

I considered the Accelero X2, think I will go with that - plus it looks the business (especially compared to the Zalman ones :) )

Cheers guys :)

If you're going water get a decent kit - not some CM/Zalman/TT rubbish

If it's air get the Scythe Infinity or the sunbeam tuniq Tower. They're the best atm

for the VGA get the Arctic cooling :)

how about a full tower silverstone or lian-li, that gives you the freedom to upgrade to watercooling in the future.

check out specialtech.co.uk for cases, they ahve laods and oc3d members get 10% off :)

I'm with Dave. Silverstone or Lian-Li and shop @ Specialtech, to get your 10% off.

Whats ur price limit for a case?

About 100 quid, but I could probably stretch to 150 if need be. I'll check out specialtech, good point about the water colling Dav0s.

You lot won't like this bit, but here goes :D Originally posted over at Hexus.

In the meantime, while I'm awaiting various things that will let me start building, I decided to make a little decoration. It's a Hexus light! It still needs to have some adjustments made to make it look good, if I decide to use it it will go in the front of the case and therefore require some sort of proper container; it might occupy a couple 3.5'' bays.

So I got hold of some orange and blue LEDs and some plain stripboard and got soldering. I arranged the LEDs 2 to a letter, with 4 for the big X. It's soldered onto a molex connector, the blue letters are on the 12V, two branches of 4 LEDs in parallel. The X takes the 5V, with two branches of 2 LEDs in parallel.

The back is a mess - not having full casing for it I didn't want to risk sticking it into other components and frying them, so I covered every bit of exposed metal with electrical tape :D

I'll pull it off when it goes into it's final casing.

The front was transparent plastic, painted black and then dremeled through to make the translucent lettering. It's really not much to look at when it's turned off:

But I think it looks rather nice on:

**EDIT** Broke the bloddy faceplate trying to attach some dividers to separate light from different LEDs...I'll have to do that bit again

tbh it needed it anyway :D ***

My case budget has increased to about 200 quid, so any recommendations? Tbh the Lian-Li you got kempez is looking rather nice.

Can't say enough good things about it in all honesty. One of the best made cases I've ever had.

For ease of watercooling the Coolermaster Stacker is awesome too.

I now hate you, seeing as I was trying to decide between the two :( :(

Cheers :D
