£159.99 is a butt ton of cash to invest in a controller for 1 game though

Whaaaaaaa? You can get a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X thats super cheap:p

Granted its the one I have but honestly wish I spent more for a higher end model.. 12 buttons isn't enough! You can never have enough buttons. I spent total of $180 on the game for the HOTAS/Game/Lifetime Edition. Well worth it imo. I don't play as much as I want to, however it's my go to game when I just went to relax and not really do much PvP type games.

Yeah but HOTAS is not just for ED. If you're into flight/space sims then it's a no brainer but you don't have to buy a full system upfront. Even a cheap joystick with a throttle and preferably yaw (rudder) control would do you just fine. Frees up a hand for the keyboard as well.

I bought my X-52 about 10 years ago. Cost a fortune then but still going strong. Just a few creaks and squeaks so well worth it.

My brother flies with keyboard and mouse on his laptop. He does ok :)

I'm going to get the game first just before Christmas and if I like it enough I'll invest £159.99 in this because come on, It looks like the sex ^_^

Saitek® Pro Flight™ X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S

So worth it. I'd be tempted by the Thrustmaster Warthog (super expensive) but can't fault my X-52 apart from some occasional software issues with the lighting.

But hey it's lasted from XP -> 7 -> 10 over the last 10 years so not complaining.

And yes the game is awesome. Can't wait for Horizons.

I actually don't like the look of the Warthog in all honesty, The Saitek® Pro Flight™ X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S has really caught my eye :)

I looked at the X-55 but found a lot of negative reviews regarding it's quality. I went with what seems to be a popular choice in ED - the T.1600M Thrustmaster joystick and a CH Pro throttle. I can't recommend these enough, the only issue I have with the T.1600M is that it could do with another hat, but for the price it is excellent as a first joystick. The CH Pro throttle is amazing - built to last with plenty of hats and buttons. The only disadvantage with this throttle is that there is no physical feedback to the throttle handles position (for example when it is dead centre for neutral throttle), but a small deadzone works very well to counter this.

My X-52 is ten years old and apart from a squeak is fine. Not to say they are necessarily the same manufacturing quality now = but google anything these days and you'll get bad reviews :)

I use keyboard and mouse, I'm doing fine so far. With the exception of some of the crazy dog fighting against Elite Eagle NPC's, they stick on me like a fly on a turd. Can't shake them :)

Beam turrets fix that little problem right quick ;)

If I'm really stuck I just boost away or toggle flight assist to get something pointed at them (or a combination of the two - boost, hit Z key, Drop throttle to zero to keep the inertia and turn into the bandit).
Depends on which ship you have and the type of weapons mounted.

The x55 has serious issues in win10 btw, also it's no where near as comfortable to use as the x52, it looks nicer but all the stick buttons are way to far away to be used properly.

You'll do just fine with keyboard and mouse to begin with :)
