El cheapo PC...

Which OS XP or Vista, should be included in the price or no?

Other than that, it sounds pretty good for a budget PC.

Id build the thing from scratch tbh. The mobo is likely to suck in a pre-built.

That's just me though...

OS = XP.

19" widescreen is a pretty small res so can he rock games @ high settings with the 8800gt? I told him stop being a tight ass and drop £1K, at least then it would be better...

Ham, I don't know about decent budget kit. I looked at intel (what I know) and blew the budget wide open!

I guess I can have another go, all in for £500 (case, monitor, periphs etc) but it doesnt seem enough

Im knocking something up for ya now:)

Unfortunatly a 8800GT is just not a budget card, and an 8600GTS should be fine for lower rez. The E21xx should clock reasonably, even with the stock cooler. While the kingston may not be an overclockers option, its 2GB for £35. Cheap case and a PSU that will handle this lot without a stress.

Appreciate that Ham :worship:

I'm going to bully him into upping the budget. I think i'll do him my GTS for a steal, but that would require a decent 500w psu. Also try to get him a better cpu, something with bang, seen e6550's for £100 inc vat. Think I should keep my eyes open on the FS section, e6400 went for cheap recently...

£500 not inc the monitor might do him.

The problem with budget is you spend an extra £50 and you can get so much better. And then another £50 and before you know it your'e spending £1k...

Nag him till he ups it a bit:D

Exactly, he has a laptop atm, cost him 1k last year. i say sell that, add that to the kitty and spend closer to £1K inc monitor... But that is me.

As he is basically my best mate, I was going to do him the q6600, blitz, GTS and some ram (not sure which but decent) for like £400/450 ish. He didn't want to spend that so I figure sell my gear for more and sort myself out and get him more mid range stuff.

How is the 8800GT not mid range? It's totally mid range!

i think I need to sit down and explain if you want it to look good, you need more money involved!

Yuir buddy needs to cough up some dough to get something worthy... if he wants to spend 500 pounds, tell him he has no business wanting to game on a PC.

A couple months ago Maximum PC had a couple editors each build PC with a $500 budget... they were both horrible and both editors ended UP bagging on each other before concluding that trying to put together a good all-around system for cheap is like trying to find the fountain of youth. (IT DOESN'T EXIST.)

I also did a 'ground up' PC a few weeks ago (just PC, no monitor/kb-m/speakers), and managed to keep to a $1200 budget for a pretty good system. Included were the Q6600, Abit IP35, 2GB GSkill DDR2-800, Sapphire Radeon HD2900Pro for core components. If you needed an OS as well, drop the CPU to an E6600 and pick up Vista Home Premium. (That HD2900Pro looks REAL GOOD for the price.)

Good luck trying to get your buddy to see the light, Herr Schmidt...

£500 ~= US$1,036 and £600 ~= US$1,244. So, if his buddy can scrape together £600 he should be able to get a "pretty good system". But, that doesn't take into account the rather annoying fact that hardware is simply more expensive in the UK. :(

My fault, thought 500 pounds was closer to $800... so yeah, 600 pounds should net him a worthy gaming PC. But he'll also have to cough up another 90-100 pounds to get a good widescreen monitor (19" seems a bit small to me, go at least 20". I personally love my [semi] new Samsung 226BW 22" monitor.)

One thing I noticed on Newegg a couple days ago was the HD2900Pro/DDR3 version was GONE. Must have sold out fast, only see the more expensive DDR4 version available. :(

GJ, Herr Schmidt, getting your buddy to spend the extra to get much better!;)
