Eek...we have a BSOD-ER

Well, today at my house (last day) we had a lan. Mates pc was fine but was suffering from restarting during gaming (formatted, checked temps and reinstalled) and it seemed fine. It randomly turned off...and kept turning off whenever it was booted (after login screen, like a virus or something) - safe mode would work, but then began to do the same.

So we formatted, or at least tried. It formatted then came windows installation...it got near the end then BSOD-ed which

ed it all up forcing it to restart installation. It kept doing this for ages so I reformatted. This time it BSODed immediately and kept doing it (various errors but Page_fault_in_non_paged_area distinctively stuck in my mind). So, again another format, hoping to get luck (it worked fine the night before). This time it tells me it requires some file (I398 or something) and couldnt find it on the disk (couldnt find the disk drive completely iirc)

So...Lan was over for him before it began. Dno why its asking for the file as it worked fine the night before. I even tried my slipstreamed disk (what i used the night before) and it either BSODs or asks for those files (then freezes in installation if missed file is skipped)

My guess is its deffo hardware - could it be ram? Temps were...ok-ish...nothin to affect it. CPU hit 55c after 5 odd hours of trying to get the biatch to work (also set bios to defaults and fail safe defaults to no avail. :( )

Really is piessing me off! Its down to me to fix it too as I built it for him

memtest86+ test ftw? Any other stuff it could be?

Cheers

xx

Exams start tomorrow too! Gah

Memtest86+ running now for at least 4 passes (default tests)

Got a maxtor hdd tester ready for after

Shouldnt be the cd as it worked before - if it is...eek :(

Late night eh? ^^

I was kindly informed that memtest got a crapload off errors. Needs too take a look at his settings i think.

Ran the test again and memtest hasnt brought anything up after 20 passes :|

Ill run the hdd tester, then zero it like frag sed, or shall i just skip to zeroing?

I never condone wiping a disk like that, outside of security reasons.

If the disk requires that much work to get it going, I replace em tbh. Chances are it`ll repeat.

Did u do anything to the mem b4 running the memtest again and getting nothing ?

No but while the test was running i was rearranging a couple of cables inside the pc that were qa bit close to fans, looked at the screen and it had gone crazy with like 1000 errors and froze up. Restarted, ran test and its all fine now

Ok, zeroed the hdd...windows has been installed. All ok until...BSOD...pci.sys

Just like before, loads of random bsods. Has anyone got any ddr1 ram they want rid of? (1gb total preferably so 2x512mb as the mobo only has 2 slots)

Atm its generic crap which doesnt surprise me its crashing. Just need some ram that some1 knows works and is a bit better than this 166mhz crap!

pci.sys??

If the system file is have a spazz.. maybe the PCI slots are the ones causeing the spazz?

Could the motherboard be at fualt?

Well it seems to working now. Zeroed it, installed a slipstreamed windows. Updated bios, updated everything inc. nforce 3 drivers (the latest were causing bsods so i got the 5.10s). All seems to be ok ATM...Had css running flatout at 100fps  which was a lot more than what I got outta the card on my sempy (30fps compared to 100 rofl). We even played some command and conquer 3 lanned...flatout and smooth too!

Finally i think its working lol
