Which would u go for??

Merits please...

If I went for the opty I would not have to change mobo...RAM not an issue anyway cos that has been sold too so could easily get DDR2)..

Thoughts please guys.

Ta:wavey:

Hmm well Opty's/X2's are very cheap

If you have enough money get Intel.

If not get an X2/Opty

Core 2's are deffo much faster for gaming...that I can personally testify to. Windows is about the same and things like F@H are much faster on C2D :)

Well nVidia SLI isn't fully supported on Intel atm (not well anyway), though NF6 is due somewhen. The AW9D Max is currently the top dawg on 975x with unnoficial support :)

LOL I thought we went through this earlier, you could always get an FX-60 if you want to stay AMD :) However, C2D in my opinion is the way to go, but which one? e6300 (Multi 6-7) and e6400(6-8) are awesome value for money, but depending on the application the lack of L2 cache can hurt them. The B1 rev 6300 and 6400 chips could easily overclock to at least e6700 speeds. If you really want raw power e6600 - e6800 can't be beaten, especially the 6800 with unlocked multi :yumyum: . But, you need to have some serious cash for the luxury. I'd honestly settle with the happy medium of 6600 - 6700. LOL I have a family and mortgage :D

As far as motherboards are concerned, you are limited if you want to retain SLI. Do you really need SLI? Imho, it's really only warranted if you're running at a huge screen resolution. The 570 and 590's suffered from memory scaling issues; nforce 6 is on the way which is supposed to have fixed this. But, there hasn't been a release date for them yet, or that I can find. Perhaps, you could get an P965 ASUS P5B Deluxe (which from bios 0711 also supports crossfire...ATI R600 :yumyum: ), either an DX10 compliant 8800GTX or GTS and the Conroe processor of choice.

As far as RAM is concerned anything GSKILL, OCZ or Mushkin. But as I told you this morning, there are two variants on the ram that I have. Don't forget to get the latest revision specifically for Intel, or you'll have some major crashing issues.

Sorry if this seems a little disjointed, but I have 3 kids hanging off my legs atm lol

Scan have the Opty 180 for £200.

But the E6300 is only £120

The problem about conroe, as llwyd pointed out the other day, is that the mobos are all in the £100s. Anyone know of one that isn't?

If you can get a mobo for say £80 and i know you sold your ram, so youve got money for a fairly compitent set of DDR2. Go conroe. If theres no mobos for under £100 then get the opty and some mushkin redline as you said:).

Run a 2405W so need to use Sli to have my games run at a good level of detail. It really does boil down to cost....the opty would simply drop into my existing setup without any messing about....then again...I may just go E6600 and clock it to 3.3 a la Kemp. Will be cooling with water so should be stable at those speeds. I have never built a system from scratch before so would be a tiny bit apprehensive with it all....

I really would like to go c2d if I am honest.

(blush...)

Ah rgr that, didn't realise you had one of those bad boys ;) Go Conroe :yumyum: We'll help you with the build mate, don't let that put you off. There's nothing like experiential learning :)

C2D is definately the way of the future, no doubt about it. The perfomance is leaps and bounds ahead of the A64 architecture. The 180 however, is a great processor. I've owned two of them, and both of them were decent clockers, one better than the other reaching a suicide oc of 3.2ghz on water, 100% dual prime stable @ 2.9ghz on water. To be honest, either the C2D or a well clocked 180 would do you well. If you're in to benchmarking, C2D is going to give you the killer results. If you're a casual or even avid gamer, a bit of benching on the side, then the Opty is probably going to save you a bit of money and hassle until you think you really NEED to upgrade to a C2D. You won't see a huge real world day-to-day increase in speed with the C2D over the 180. It all boils down to what you want to do, and how much you want to spend. Either choice is a good choice! :wavey:

Agreed with Frag...but you WILL see the performance increase in games on C2D...I saw a 20% increase from X2 @ 2.8GHz to C2D

That's definately a healthy bump! Did you actually notice the raw difference, or just noticed an increase in FPS? I would imagine that in some really demanding games you could definately feel the performance increase by gaining those extra FPS, where in others the FPS is so high to begin with another 20% is a moot point? Am I somewhat close?

I'm basing the FPS increase on CSS

But other games do play much smoother. Especially Oblivion which is a CPU killer. The C2D is deffo a gamers chip

you boys are class.

PV is a legend......

Am also thinking about timing....at the moment my a64 kit is still worth a few pennies second hand. If I dont chnage to c2d my kit will be next to worthless when the time to upgrade comes....what dya reckon?

Fraggles....just how good is the opty 180/185?

Wirelessly posted (LG Fusic: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/2.0.4719/1372; en; U; ssr))

my 180 was wicked fast, loved every second of it mate. didnt know they had a 185, whats the speed?

should be a dualcore, the single core has lower numbers.

but its a waste of money if you ask me :/

i could get memory motherboard and a c2d cpu for less than a 180.
