Dumb Intel question.

Hi, I will be purchasing a 4690k next week, I see the 4690k and 4790k are sometimes listed as "devils canyon" sometimes not, so my question is, are there two versions of these cpu's ?

Nope, Devils Canyon is just another name for Haswell Refresh, or the "codename" of the CPU. There's only one version of the 4690k and 4790k.

Devils Canyon as stated above is the Haswell refresh, The only thing different is they use a better thermal compound between the metal shroud and the CPU die as well as adding more circuitry underneath to smooth out power delivery.

Just to clarify, dice is comparing haswell to haswell refresh (devils canyon) ;)

I know what you meant, but some could have been confused because you said "the only thing different" without mentioning haswell :P

I don't want this to turn into a he said she said bull thing but I'm guessing the OP has an education level higher than a kindergartner so I'm pretty sure he could have worked that out on his own by just reading the previous replies ;)

Agreed, just trying to make things clearer. Someone who knows less than the OP might find this thread in the future and be confused by it ;) Anyway, lets get back on topic

Well I'm no kindergartner, but Swedish and I got a bit confused... so yeah ^_^ :p

I think there was more to it than just a new TIM. IIRC the resistors under the chip were laid out differently too.
