thinkimg of getting 2x opteron quad 2352's....has anyone else gone this route on the asus 'quadfather trail'?

i like the idea of 8cores etc...i have the /b vers bios to hand, but i had heard that it would not always be needed....also,must i deffo get ECC ram?again...i had heard that it is not always the case.

any help be great....if i have to change ram and mobo i may as well get complete new setup!!!

i'm with ya on that, someone has to suport amd :)

whats your rough plan for the system, other than two quad cores? :)

well....

...its not primarily for gaming.its a render 3d rig really!

3d studio will eat 8 cores np....its a bad prog!!

will also upgrade ram to 8gb but i think i will try the non ecc to see if it works etc.

also plan to make all storage disks on her 1tb so i should see 7TB + 74gb raptor for c lol!

hmmm....

....not sure if this is any good?

super pi 1M = 30secs

32M = 25mins 45secs

not bad i think,i could only see the prog using 2 cores so maybe it could be better?

Skulltrail ftw, im "hoping" to buy it all soon, but for the same reason, its alot of money to find and i have other things to worry about (mainly the mrs complaing).

This sounds like it could be interesting, when you going to finally have it all?

I don't want to burst anyones bubble but there is no point in an 8 core computer.

Software has yet to catch up and this is why I bet you that even a overclocked Intel Celeron will beat this computer at Super PI.

well....

....as i said earlier, this is a rendering machine and not a gamer rig.

it plays games etc of course!

3d studio will eat 8 cores in rendering and its quite good to render and still watch a movie hehe!

i dare say, this is about the 'limit' for this machine as i dont see any more upgrades coming in the near future???

anyway, its been good evolving my comp from an athlonxp2000+ with a ti4800 gf card.....onboard sound and 30gb hdisk lol!

as for time scale....hmmm,really soon i hope!!

8 cores using less power than 4 will be a good selling point and maybe they will open up the gx2's a bit :D

I salute you in your efforts. Cheap and fairly powerful.

Those moaning about Octocore setups (for no reason, programming issues, cost etc) should actually look for the common problem between the multi core setups.

The memory controller! We have had the same architecture almost since computers were invented albeit slightly altered to run faster but certainly the principle has not changed an iota. When the is one memory controller per stick of RAM and one stick of RAM per core present/supported only then will these multi core setups be a real boost. As it is now everything MUST go through one piddly controller slowing the whole down. It can cope quite well but look at the GPU development and recent release of F@H on GPUs. Compare the data from any CPU to the enabled ATi/nVidia cards. The data proves that the GPU is FAR FAR FAR in advance of the CPU technology. The major difference being individual controllers for the memory and this means when a task is split its done right.

I know thats a lot to say and moan about but it has bugged me since a friend gave me the same lecture a few months ago (he works for Intel). Oh and BTW i'm quad core and SLi its not efficient but its damn fun.

Ditto, Quads, SLI and even Duals are almost useless.

As we are still only doing one thing at one time, thanks to the FSB. Bit of a sucker.

I salute you brother for holdin up with the AMD name :) Im doin the same!

ANywhos my opinion is this. If you actualy run programs that use all these cores then so be it buy them! Its always better to have more if they are properly utilized. Also, you dont need ECC ram unless your running a server. ECC ram actualy slows you down. Just make sure your board can support non bufferd ram of course.

ok...

....i think i will order these cpu's on fri.

is there any resale value in the fx74's....would anyone need them!!

anyhoo...amd is my choice :p

as long as they will work with the ram i have then all ok.if not then i will need to sell off old bits to make dosh for ECC stuff.

now...can i just load these cpu's up or do i have to change the bios?...i kinda assumed that the bios auto-sensed the type/voltage etc....anyone?
