DPI settings on mouses

I got my Corsair M60 today, and I'm struggling to understand things with DPI.

I find windows works best at 1600dpi, but I find anything over around 800 unplayable in gaming.

I know this isnt really that much of a problem, but what's the point of the mouse going up to 5700dpi? I cant use windows whatsoever with it that high, and gaming is just a joke.

So whats the difference between DPI and sensitivity on the windows or game's menu.

And how do lot use yours?

Well I've got my mouse set to 1600 dpi and if I find in game sensitivities too high I just adjust the sensitivity level in the particular game I'm having trouble with.

Yea I've got the G9x which has ridiculous DPI too. I suppose some 'pros' choose to have high settings on their mouse and low settings on the game which might do something? Maybe smooth the mouse movement.

My mouse comes with a selectable DPI button which I press mid game. I only use settings 2+3 of 5 (which I think is around the 1200-1600 mark). Low DPI for sniping, higher DPI for close quarters and general gaming. 5700 is totally unusable for me...

Dots per inch. So if you had a 1600p monitor you'd ofcourse have a higher DPI than a 1080p monitor.

No, I dont think thats right. I'm assuming it means, 2000 dpi would be everytime you move your mouse 1 inch, the on screen mouse moves 200 pixels across, in which case resolution shouldnt matter.

I too have the sniper button, and dpi changing buttons on the mouse, but I find them quite annoying to have to press so I'm just not really bothering. Trying to set to something I'm happy with then leave it

Yeh you are right, it has nothing to do with the resolution of the monitor. Just stick to one dpi setting for the mouse and change the settings in games/applications until you are comfortable.

pretty muchs sums it up really.
all about personal preference. i have a coolmaster sentinel and between a few games and other use i changed the dpi offen. really is all they have the easy adjust on a mouse for.

also if you use a mouse sensitivity for ages you'll get used to it. like you use very high dpi you'll find it easy to use, and low dpi really hard as in it will be hard to move.

One other thing is the mouse dpi is set by how much the laser picks up. so pretty much the refresh rate of the mouse. As in a mouse could pick up more per second it might move smoother across the monitor and by doing so speed up the mouse.

2400 is too high for me. 1600 is about right

Also, as you have the M60 (and are rigs are even more the same now) How do you get the macros on the mouse to work? I'm trying to program the buttons, to like, reload by pressing in the middle mouse wheel. Set all that up in the Corsair mouse config, and it works in windows but not the game. Any idea why not? Key bindings on bf3 dont pick it up either

lol, good times when other don't like your sensitivity. Had a friend use my mouse once, he had trouble.

I just checked the M60 software thing, and it turns out that i've been using the mouse at 4600DPI for Windows...heh.
You really do just get used to it over time.
As for 10 sensitivity on xbox - crazy talk! I can only muster 6, or my accuracy goes to sh*t.

Ok, now I'm having a few issues with the mouse.

To assign buttons, I go add, keystroke, then choose the keyboard press. With hardware playback unticked, it holds down the '3' and I have no way of getting off it. With it ticked, that works fine, but my DPI settings get locks to a value, and changing the sliders does nothing, and it feels to be around the 1000 dpi mark

Well what DPI you use is personal preference, also resolution does matter. I personally use 6000DPI, no sensitivity changes or mouse acceleration and correction. Funny seeing my friends use my mouse for FPS though, you just see them spinning around in circles xD.

DPI: Stands for Dots per Inch, although what SteelSeries calls it Counts per Inch is technically more correct.
For example since most of you use 1600DPI is seems. What it means is for every inch you move your mouse, the mouse gets a count of 1600. Now if you have windows sensitivity set to 6/11 (middle setting) and disabled mouse acceleration. You get a 1:1 ratio between counts to pixels. So it will move the 1600 cursor 1600 pixels across the screen.
