Yes. There are two ways of using Sync without using laggy old Vsync in the drivers themselves. Plus there is something called DSR, which basically renders the game and 4k (or even higher if you wish) and then makes it fit onto your screen at that pixel density. So in a nutshell you can run 4k games on a non 4k monitor with most of the detail.

it's the same amount of pixels on your screen though, so it's not really "running at 4k" and you don't really get much more detail, perhaps slightly smoother because you get a kind of super-sampling on jaggies. It's just basically running screen-space multisampling. You run the game at a larger resolution than your screen then it's scaled down and you get more "averaged" pixels than you would running it pure-native.

Protip though, don't bother running Antialiasing on DSR, as you're double dipping and it's a waste of GPU.

I am, and I'll look into it, but I doubt I have enough weight to get that kind of thing pushed through ;)

Aye it isn't ideal, but it does definitely add to games that look bad at low resolutions (like Fallout 4). So far for DSR I have only ran 4k so I had disabled AA any way.

Am going to play around with my Apple Cinema screen next weekend and drive it to 1440p using VSR. Will see how that goes :)

Shadow of Mordor has an in game option to do the above but 8k on a 4k screen does not look much better and it is very resource hungry.

TBH mate I have never compared the HUDs and stuff. I should do that really. All I can say is that from about 7ft back at 4k I can definitely read all of the things I need to.

I will get some comparison shots. Some taken at 4k, and some taken at 1440p, then shrink the 4k image down to 1440p and compare the two..

Will do that over the weekend. The weekend after? I have to drain the whole sodding rig down again.

as in 4k on a non 4k screen? or 4k on a 4k screen?

It doesn't add extra pixels, if anything scaled stuff to me looks less clear because you get blurring on text elements (depending on their size) because they'll get their sharpness averaged out by the scale-down.

Very nice :) I've always been a fan of the Chrome stuff, it looks really nice in-engine :)
 
On a non 4k. The only thing is I just thought about it and I *think* what you get a screenshot of is actually a full 4k sized image. In games that DSR doesn't work the image simply does not fit the screen. However, sometimes when I load FO4 it doesn't fit the screen either until I alt tab away and then back. Can you confirm if the image is actually 4k at a low level where you will grab the screenshot?

err, it depends, I think if the DSR is done by nVidia, the game will render at the full resolution and you'll intercept the screenshot at that resolution. If the game offers it's own resolution scaling, I think it gets scaled down before it reaches the point where a screenshot will capture it.
