Does XFX XTR still have OCP issues? Any quiet alternatives?

Hi,

I live in Europe/Poland, many people recommend XFX XTR PSUs here.

I've read some super-old 2009 year review about XFX Black XTR PSU in which it failed under high load, by failed I mean it has broken instead of shutting down, like other, even cheaper PSUs did.

So I wonder if XFX is still having some issues, do you have any info about that? Does it have now proper OCP protection (there were some rumors that it didn't).

I'm looking for 650-750W reliable and quiet PSU(I'm going to put it in Fractal Define R4). Some people recommend also Corsair RM as quiet PSU but I've heard they are not that reliable.

I can live with some quiet fan which is always on, I've heard that hybrid PSU (no fan when load is low) might be less reliable (more work for capacitors or something - I'm completely newbie if it comes to PSUs).

If XFX is not reliable, I'd be grateful if you could provide me some alternative.

I will use it with i5 4590 + R9 290x, but I need more power as I will upgrade my build in the future.

at the moment I believe they use seasonic as their OEM, which produce arguably the best PSU's, so you shouldnt have any issues with any of the pro series.

My XFX black edition 1250W is probably one of the most nicely built PSU's Ive had

XFX psus are rebadged Seasonic PSUs. They are very good for the money usually. EVGA are also worth looking at (the OEM for these are Superflower, which are as good as seasonic).

Loads of people on here have the RM psus and now that an issue with the RM750 appears to be fixed (something about the psus overheating) they are worth looking at.

basically:
Corsair RM series- excellent RMA and the don't seem to give anyone on here many issues. Only issue is they aren't the most highly rated by others due to the OEM being not fantastic
Seasonic(XFX)- Reliable, well made psus however XFX might be iffy about RMA
Superflower(EVGA)- cheap, reliable, well made however possibly not as quiet as the others listed, RMA is very good though.

tbh I've only heard good things about XFX's RA dept. Especially with GPU's

WHAT.

Idk about since they changed everything but back in the 7xxx days they were a pain in the ass to deal with. Especially didn't help their cards were crap to begin with.

If they have changed then they are really on my recommendation list ^_^

well dont take my word for it, but they have been great the the r9 series RMA, and are somewhat flexible with their warranty policy too.

DO NOT EVER RECONMEND SAPPHIRE, I WILL COME AND HAUNT YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IF YOU DO. The warranty they provide is a joke, not only did it take over 5 months to RMA my 290x, but they sent me back a faulty card with the worst possible TIM application I have ever seen, some of the VRMs werent even in contact with the thermal pad... They werent even willing to ship an immediate replacement after they sent me a faulty card!!!

Too late :). Still prefer them to XFX from a performance perspective.

Never had an issue with their RMA although it must be said I don't recommend them to anyone outside of the UK/US on the basis of their RMA being a bit odd outside of major markets, even in the EU  . Oh and everyone in Austrailia hates them as well it seems and you're not the only Aussie who has had issues with them so I understand :P.

They make the best non ref cooled 290s/290x cards that also happen to be cheaper than most competitors. Sapphire have done really well from the 290. They've gone from a smaller company to pretty much one of the biggest AMD card vendors. I'm presuming they'll do better RMA services as time goes by.

My brother had also various probs with Spahire and the 290, but also with xfx and Power color... only asus took their card back directly and send the money about 2 month late? He isnt lucky lol but he managed it and has his quad system with 4 different vendors running, i think

Im not a big fan of Asus either tbh, though sapphire and MSI are definitely at the bottom of the barrel for me, though I do love the tri-x, toxic and lightnings though.

Literally every card I have gotten from MSI was a poor overclocker and COIL WHINE!! my only decent experience was the 560ti Hawk.

I've read on techpowerup that XFX XTR can be quite noisy on high load.

I've found some alternatives, more expensive but I can manage if they are definitely quieter. I will just copy-paste them from other forum where I asked same question:

Alternatives and prices in my country:
650W Golden Flower Leadex Gold - 161$ << my preference
850W Golden Flower Leadex Gold - 183$
550W Be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 - 170$ << I've read one review where it did some weird noises on medium load (coil whine?)
650W Be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 - 190$
700W Cooler Master V700 - 183$ - 191$ ($191 is a bit high for me, id's say 180 is max) << fan is spinning all the time which is fine for me, but its like 32db according to techpowerup
600W Enermax Platimax - 173$ << (some people say it has short cables, and it's not perfect electrically)
650W Corsair RM - 140$ << cheap, quiet ... but is it reliable?
550W Corsair RM - 130$
700W SilentiumPC Supremo M1 Platinum - 156$
550W XFX XTR 116$ << cheap, I've heard it's nice quality, but quite loud
650W XFX XTR 150$

I'll put this in Fractal Define R4
