I usually swear by nlite/vlite when making my xp/vista bootdisks but lately I've been questioning this. I mean, sure for slipstreaming its great and ill keep using it for this. But seeing my friend running Vista on his machine (lower specced) and smoother than mine whilst still being full install (not vlited) is strange. He even had all bells and whistles enabled and it was a lot less maintained (using built in defrag, whereas I use PerfectDisk)

IIRC when I used an un-vlited version of vista on my machine it was smoother (iirc!)

So does vista not like vlite (as PV reckons :p) or is it just luck? lol

Your thoughts and experiences?

Saw the title and made me think straight back to your mission Rast.

I haven't taken anything out from my Vista. 32 bit ran fine with my 2gb of ram but now I'm on 64 bit with 4gb of ram it's silky smooth and fast. Have no need to lite it.

I just use the Vista defrag and Acronis for backup images.

Yes that was a very featurefull post you made there rast.

Vlite has only fecked up a few times for me due to too aggressive removal of key components lol.

I will definately follow your little "guide" in the future. Im just contemplating whether to actually use vlite to tweak anything other than to slipstream sp1 or not (planning for my new mobo/quad arriving tomorrow)

another debate im looking into is: 3rd party defrag or not?

im slipstreaming sp1 as i speak as i feel this, at least is going to offer a lot better performance/resistance to errors as the changes are applied prior to booting into windows. Making big changes such as a service pack whilst in windows doesnt make me feel fuzzy inside at all :|

I will say 1 thing. vLite will get better and better, just as nLite did. I`d use nLite with no qualms at-all tbh.

I don't vlite vista, due to reports of it running slower, but xp has to be nlite'ed to run :)

Am reinstalling vista soon, with SP1, so will follow your guide Rast :)

Vista`s defrag is something that sums up m$ for me.

3rd party ? Dunno, usually better - but no1 knows what Vistas one does anyway - or how long it`s gonna take - or if it`s ever worth doing.

lolz...

iv just slipstreamed my vista sp1, didnt remove anything or even tweak, just made the installation automatic.

I Nlited XP and it makes a huge difference.

Vista on the other hand just feels like a snail to me.. what ever I do to it.

I gave up vliting Vista as no matter what I removed, it always seemed to

something totally unrelated up. Running Vista with SP1 here and although it has its annoyances, it does what I need it to.

Well I should be shortly upgrading to a 64bit OS soon, So i'm gonna remove all the worthless crap and Vlite it a bit.

Ive tried my vLited copy and regular in both x86 and x64 flavors and they where both slow. Now that i have an 8800 series GPU im gonna try again and see if i get such a dip in performance.

4gig RAM? Mine was slow with 2 and much faster with 4

QFT!

I thought my Vista was pretty quick... Didn't think the 4GB would make that much of a difference over 2GB, but ya soon notice the big difference.

No and happy.

Rast's conclusion (results from test) showed eff all benefit if any from lots of messing about. I just turn UAC off and roll with that.

Besides I have ultimate, what would be the point of vliteing all the features off???

I`m about to install 1 pc back to 32bit from 64bit cos the drivers don`t work for various components. Mainly sound.

Game pc is still 64bit, stripped til it`s xp w/dx10, works well.
