someone once said to me.. the more ram the better i've currently got a 3200 amd 64bit cpu with 512ddr 400 ram, im wondering if i should add another 512?

i use my rig mainly for downloading.. burning and encoding dvd's. which is sometimes slow.. im also thinking of upgrading from ide to sata hdd but thats another topic in another thread

more memory would be useful for burning and encoding, and it would be best to make sure you are making the most of dual channel, increasing your memory from 512 to 1gb is certainly a good idea.

Not always is more ram better... It depends on the type of applications that you frequently run and what you use your computer for the most. Benchmark whores will tell you the least amount of ram you can get away with the better, as the smaller capacity modules allow for tighter timings at faster speeds.

Gamers like a combination of both... Speed and quantity. 1gb usually does the trick but these new games are using more and more memory, I just stuck in another gig the other night and I already see a performance gain in BF2 and EQ2.

Data crunchers just want as much as can possibly fit :) Doesn't need to be the fastest in the world because the operations they are performing usually can't be executed at a rate befitting to a super high speed low latency ram and won't show any performance difference. The larger the area to buffer data to the better!

For your needs I'd say you're somewhere in the middle. 1gb of low latency high speed ram should suit you well.

I would say thats about right, although if he's burning DVDs and using DMA, the more memory, the better imo.
