display settings changing by itself?

My mom has an issue with her computer with the color quality setting changing when the computer is turned on. When the computer is turned on from sleep it boots up fine and when the desktop screen appears its fine for about 10 seconds then goes black, when it comes back on the color quality setting is set to "lowest" (8 bit I think). I can switch it back to 32 bit and it stays that way until next shut down. Its a Sony Vaio and is running XP and the gpu is a GeForce fx5200. I have installed new drivers from NVIDIA but problem is still there. I am unsure if the card is going bad or maybe something else. Any suggestions would be awesome, I will be over there this weekend to look at it for her. Thanks!

Sounds like a driver problem, nothing too serious... You could always create a batch file on the desktop to change this. Sounds like it's entering driver recovery mode.

Thanks for the help but I'm afraid I do not know how to do this. If you give a couple of pointers it would help, but if it requires you to have to write me a book then I don't mind consulting Dr. Google. Even a link to something helpful will be enough. Thanks again!

maybe route through the BIOS to see whats is there is the GPU settings,or talk to Sony

is it still under warranty?

No warranty cuz it's a pretty old dude. I think I bought in 01' and probably put in the card in 04' (when it cost $150). Its a PCV- RX650
