Disks

Hi guys,

I'm unsure which SSD I should get - I want to put two in a RAID on a 6GB/s SATA socket. The SSD needs to be fast and of good quality. It will be a boot disk and for CAD and scratch disks (and video editing).
What are all your thoughts on the best SSD for the job?

For storage I was looking at a set of WD Caviar Black WD4001FAEX 3.5" 4TB in RAID. What are all your thoughts on these or should I go for the WD RE disks? or something else?

Hope you can all steer me in the right direction(s).

Hope you all had (or are having, depending on where you are) Christmas.

I would say Intel 330/520 for the SSD's

For the storage disks you should be fine with the Blacks, i would go for the Greens, but that is because the dont vibrate at all compared to the BK or RE disks (but the greens are a little bit more slow)

Apparently those SSDs use the Sandforce Chip and the Sandforce chips are no good?

That depends on who you're asking, the sandforce SSDs have had many errors in their firmware compared to other chips, but som of the early Curial m4 disks also had problems.

All i can say is that i work in a store where we have sold about 400 Intel SSD's this year, and only 3 has come back for RMA so far (2 of them were 320 with firmware failiure)

Personally i couldn't live with the slow write speeds on the marvel chips, but won't say anything else about them since i haven't had time to play with them yet :)

Crucial M4s and Samsung 830s are forum favourites and both very good, reliable drives. They're also really rather cheap.
Samsung also have a new drive out, the 840 and 840 Pro, the latter of which has recently been reviewed on the main site, so you might want to give that a looksy.

I just go with WD Greens. Don't need a great amount of speed to store files :)
If they're massive files that need to be accessed a lot, then I guess the Blacks are the one for you, though. Good warranty on 'em, too.

There are going to be CAD and video files (after they have been worked on using the SSDs). So they are pretty big esp the 3D rendering of the CAD.

Well this is my plan - feel free to comment on it :)

2x Samsung 840Pro SSD in RAID1 - Boot Disk(s)
4x WD CaviarBlack 4TB in RAID10 - Storage Disk(s)

@dugdiamond - your saying maybe add a RAID10 or 0 for scratch disks and tell AfterEffects/PremPro/AutoCAD where to find this 'scratch'/rendering disk?

no need for parity for a 'scratch' disk - speed is the essence there.
what you have there is very good

speed for OS and apps PLUS 8TB speed+mirrored for storage.

and go for the CB's.... i cannot understand why people raid blue's or green's (lol - it defeats the purpose of striping)

remember: fast data throughput from a storage device is all okay, but if you haven't got loads of fast memory, it will bottleneck ;)

@dugdiamond - memory/RAM aint going to be an issue - theres tons.

So based on what you've said idea v2:

2x Samsung 840Pro SSD - Boot Disk(s)
4x WD CaviarBlack in RAID10 - Storage
2x WD CaviarBlack in RAID0[stripe] - Scratch

Let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions at all :)
Cheers for all your help.
