Microsoft has now confirmed that DirectX 12 is to be unveiled at GDC later this month, confirming that Microsoft will indeed be creating a new API and not simply updating DirectX 11 like previous updates.
The official DirectX 12 Twitter account says;
A link to a DirectX 12 teaser site was also provided, showing the image below. The Teaser page shows that AMD, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm will be supporting this new API, with Qualcomm's presence highlighting the importance mobile development will be to Microsoft in this iteration of Direct3D.
Other highlights of DX12 will the "closer to the metal" hardware access and a reduced "CPU rendering overhead" which will allow developers to be able to employ more advanced rendering techniques and to be able to better utilize available hardware.
This will be the first full API release from Microsoft since the release of DX11 in 2009, which given the history of DirectX could mean that a change in OS will be required, does this mean that Windows 9 is coming too? I guess we will find out as GDC commences.
